How to Take Your Mind Off Personal Problems and Get to Work

Wonderful as it is, life has a funny way of throwing a few curveballs in our way once in a while - and unfortunately no one is exempt.

Personal problems have a way of looming over us and if they’re not handled well, can really leak into our professional lives, which in turn can cause even more problems - and nobody wants that. It’s incredibly difficult not to wear your emotions on your sleeve when you’re going through a really tough time. But hopefully these tips will help you to separate your personal life from your professional life and remain productive at work…

Confide in a Trusted Work Friend

When you are dealing with a tough personal situation, no matter how professional you try to remain, it is never a good idea to completely bottle up your feelings. This is unhealthy and can lead to an unwanted outburst or breakdown.

If things are getting on top of you, quietly ask a friendly, understanding and trustworthy work colleague to lunch or perhaps for a quiet drink straight after work to talk about your problems. A fresh perspective and keen set of ears will help you get a few things off your chest and relieve the pressure while in the workplace.

Avoid Personal Conversations and Office Gossip

No matter where you work, there are always people who find pleasure in letting everyone know about every detail of their life and gossip about others whenever possible - avoid these people at all costs!

Someone openly talking about their own, or indeed someone else’s, personal problems is likely to hit an emotional nerve and cause you to spill your issues to half the office. This can lead to further regret, embarrassment and anxiety. Don’t become another piece of office gossip - put on your headphones and listen to something soothing instead.

Plan Your Work Days in Advance

When things get bad and play on our mind, it is difficult to focus which often leads to a cloudy mind and lack of productivity.

By writing down a set agenda for your working day the night before, you can clearly see what you need to do and accomplish. By sticking to these goals, you are actually eliminating the possibility of dwelling on your personal problems when at work - and when you tick those things off the list, you’ll gain a huge sense of personal achievement.

To help you plan your work days, you can download organisational apps such as Evernote to your android or IOS device. This nifty little piece of software is great for planning and is very user friendly.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy!

Of course, if it was that simple, we’d all be prancing around the workplace like the cast from Glee, however, almost everything in life boils down to attitude. Some things in life can consume us, but with a little time, the right support and a positive mental attitude, it is possible to achieve great things no matter what.

So, in short - don’t bottle things up, confide in the people you trust, set yourself plans and positive goals every day, find laughter and happiness wherever possible and things will work out in the end. They really will.
