Thank You Notes – The Rules Are Changing

Writing a thoughtful thank you letter after receiving a gift from someone has always been polite etiquette, and despite the fact that most people don’t “write” letters anymore (they send emails), it has because less expected of people to send them. But thank you notes are not just for birthdays and Christmas. Employers often expect to receive one, just for interviewing you!

The fact is, you should send a polite and well thought out thank you letter after a job interview. Why? Well, if you want to stand out from the rest of the candidates (60% of whom do not send thank you notes), then this is a perfect opportunity to do so.

Aside from standing out to recruiters as a polite and considerate candidate, a thank you note can also swing the opinion of an interviewer in your favour. If your interview didn’t go as well as hoped, or you failed at giving your best answers due to panic or stress on the day, you can use your thank you note to add in some important facts that you forgot to mention.

The tables are turning

The current jobs market is making it harder and harder for good candidates with great potential to secure jobs. The number of hopeful candidates far outweighs the number of suitable jobs and so employers can be very selective and demanding in the hiring process. It is not all doom and gloom for candidates though, in fact the direction of the jobs market now means that in the next few years, skilled, qualified, and experienced candidates will be in high demand by employers.

Why have the tables turned? Because so many people have been put off going to university and getting into debt with such a bleak job outlook, and many job seekers, who have great potential, have resigned to accepting mediocre jobs that prevent them from progressing.  

Employers need to compete

In time (hopefully sooner rather than later), employers will be the ones competing for skilled and experienced employees. They can no longer rely on their popular company name to secure the best employees, they now have to go the extra mile to stand out, and how better to stand out than to write a personalised thank you note to candidates, thanking them for their interest in your company.

That’s right. Employers will soon be sending out thank you notes to try and sway the decision of the candidate to choose their company.

 Whether you are an employer or interview candidate, sending a thank you note will be appreciated by the recipient and may even swing things in your favour!
