The National Police of Peru

The Policia Nacional del Peru, or PNP as it is commonly abbreviated to, is the national police force of Peru and acts to provide public order and safety. This police force is large in scope and comprises of the Civil Guard, Republican Guard and the Investigative Police. The police force operates under the control of the Peruvian Interior Ministry, which means that careers with the Peruvian police are civil service careers operating under the government of Peru.

The national police force is split across several specialist ‘divisions’. These specialist divisions include:

  • Special Operations (DINOES)

  • Anti-Narcotics Unit (DINANDRO)

  • Criminal Investigations (DININCRI)

  • Anti-Terrorism (DIRCOTE)

The national police of Peru has jurisdiction over Peru’s land, air and sea territories and operates to:

  • Preserve domestic order

  • Preserve public order

  • Investigate the disappearance of individuals

  • Monitor and control borders

  • Ensure national security

  • Enforce the laws of Peru

  • Protect the people of Peru

The Peruvian national police have extensive powers in relation to policing and national security tasks. Their primary powers of policing include, but are not limited to:

  • Police clearance certificates

  • Register police records of people including all legal requisitions

  • Carry out criminology and technical functions

  • Secure evidence in relation to police investigations

  • Operate in cooperation and coordination with international police for the prevention and determine of crime
