We have long been told that to achieve true happiness in life we must find a balance between our work and life; otherwise, we risk focusing too much on work and missing out on all those fulfilling experiences a person can have in their life, like being in a relationship or becoming a parent.

The problem with this theory is that it views life and work as two concepts that are in conflict with one another, and this may not always be the case. These two notions – work and life have traditionally been separated but as the world advances and work environments change it might be time that we let go of these notions and begin working towards a work-life fusion.

What Is Work Life Fusion?

Although we all struggle with our work and the responsibilities and emotional toll it has on us it may be time to start singing another tune and realize that our work can become an inseparable part of our life.

For example, if you are an artist your work and life overlap because inspiration lies within moments of life and thus the two notions – work and life - cannot be separated. A photographer needs to carry his camera around all the time because he or might come across something that they can use for their work.

Of course, I’m not suggesting that we carry around computers all the time. I do believe that we should allow our minds to roam free between these two worlds because our knowledge and experience from one area can most certainly help us out in another area so long as we can think of analogies and transferable skills and experiences.

Work-life fusion means to realize that work and life are not two separate notions that need to be kept apart, we need to understand that our work life and our after work life are complimentary to one another. They are simply two components of who we are as people and thus striving for success in one area means success in the other area as well. So, becoming a parent does not mean that you can’t become a successful professional, it does not need to be an absolute one or the other choice.

How Should You Do It?

Well, the first step to achieving this self-actualization that is work-life balance is to identify what your calling is. It’s only when you’ve found your calling that you’ll be able to fuse your life and work together. Identify, what you’re passionate about and pursue a career in that area and you’ll be able to blend the two together and achieve true happiness.

Of course, it can be hard to identify your calling especially if you are uncertain about what you want to do with your life so don’t be hesitant to try out a few things you are interested in. Don’t stress too much if you don’t find your calling straight away, remember that you’re trying to find a career that suits your life and the other way round, so it’s okay to experiment for a while. After all, there’s no one saying that you should only do one thing for the rest of your life.
