Tips For Congratulating a Departing Colleague

After working with your company or organization for some time, some of your co-workers might eventually move on to other opportunities. If you had a good relationship, it would only be wise to congratulate and wish them well on their new job. This will make your colleagues feel special and appreciated as they make their exit. Here are some of the ways you can say farewell to a co-worker as they leave your organization:

1. Write a letter

Some people find it difficult to relay their emotions and sentiments to someone else face -to-face. If you find yourself in such a situation when a co-worker is leaving, you could simply write a letter. Let them know that you enjoyed working with them and how sad you are that they are leaving. Mention some of your best memories from the time you spent together. Point out their positive qualities and how they impacted your life and career. Finally, congratulate them on their new job and wish them well.

2. Buy a thoughtful gift

Gifts are a great way of appreciating a colleague who is leaving. However, don’t just buy a gift for the sake of it. Be sure to put some time and thought into choosing a gift. First, think about their hobbies or interests. For instance, if your co-worker loves reading, you could buy them a book which would be useful in their new posting. Alternatively, you could get them something that will remind them of some special memories you shared together. However, be sure to get a gift that fits within your budget. If possible, mobilize your other colleagues to contribute cash for a common gift.

3. Design a personalized card

You could choose to buy a ready-made card and pass it around for your colleagues to sign it. However, it would be more advisable to create a funny and unique personalized card for the departing co-worker. Be sure to include words and images which will remind them of their time in the organization. You can use programs such as Photoshop to create this card and then ask your colleagues to write their farewell messages. You could go further to frame the card before presenting it to the co-worker that is leaving.

4. Create a custom-made poster

Besides creating a personalized card, you could also consider designing a custom made poster. If you search online, you will find different kinds of poster templates. You can then add the relevant wordings to it. For instance, you could think of adjectives that describe the mannerisms and personality of the person who is leaving. Arrange these words creatively on the poster, get it framed and then present it.

5. Throw a mega leaving party

Parties are always a great way to celebrate the contribution of a colleague to the organization or company. Be sure to plan the party well ahead of time to ensure that nothing will disrupt it. You could hold it within the office premises or at another location which is easily accessible. During the party, a few people could be given the chance to speak some words of encouragement to their colleague who is leaving. The party would also be the appropriate place to present gifts.
