Celebrities are busy people. Not only do they spend their days working on movie sets or in recording studios, they also have to attend interviews, photo shoots, premieres and other high glamour activities. With everything on their plate, getting an education might seem like a distant dream. However, thanks to taking advantage of online classes, some celebrities were able to earn their degrees from different universities. Here is a list of the top ten celebrities who took online classes.
1. Shannen Doherty
Shannen Doherty, star of Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, must really believe in online classes. Not only did she pursue a Liberal Arts degree via an online program, she was also a spokesperson for Education Connection, a service that provides information to potential students regarding online education.
2. Shaquille O'Neal
While Shaquille O’Neal may be a legendary basketball player, even the sports star realized that he needed to have a backup plan in case things went south. That is why he decided to get his online MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2005, and then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Leadership and Education at Barry University. What probably motivated Shaq to finish was the fact that he promised his mother he would after dropping out of college to play in the NBA.
3. Hilary and Haylie Duff
Former Disney star Hilary Duff didn’t exactly keep quiet when she took online classes as part of the Harvard Extension School back in 2005. Duff, together with sister Haylie, took two classes for credit to fit around her hectic schedule. Duff said at the time: “I am really excited about going back to school and the on-line classes are really cool!”
4. Marcia Cross
Marcia Cross is best known for roles on Desperate Housewives and Melrose Place, but did you know that the beautiful redhead took an online course? Thanks to online learning, Cross was able to earn a Master’s in Psychology while attending Antioch University.
5. James Franco
With his busy schedule that includes starring in movies like 127 Hours, Milk, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it would seem that James Franco doesn’t have much time for school. But thanks to online degrees, Franco was able to complete his Bachelor’s at UCLA before earning his Master’s at Columbia University. Franco also enrolled at Yale University where he worked on a Ph.D. in English.
6. Steven Spielberg
Though Steven Spielberg dropped out of college to make movies (which worked out really well for him), the call of academia soon came roaring back. In 2002, the E.T. director took some online courses that allowed him to complete his BA in Film Production and Electronic Arts at California State University Long Beach. Instead of making the required 12-minute short film that was required, the school decided to accept Schindler’s List in its place.
7. Arnold Schwarzenegger
Even before classes were offered via the Internet, celebrities still took advantage of Distance Education. Back when he was a student in the 70s, Arnold Schwarzenegger attended the University of Wisconsin – Superior. With the help of the school’s distance learning program, he graduated with his degree in Business and International Economics.
8. Venus Williams
While she was launching her own empire, tennis great Venus Williams took online classes offered by Indiana University-East. During his time as a clerk at a Johannesburg legal firm, Nelson Mandela was able to complete his degree through correspondence courses from the University of South Africa.
