Australia is one of the largest economies in the world, having ranked 12th in terms of Gross Domestic Product.  It also rates highly as one of the best places in the world to live, particularly the larger cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra.

If you are looking for a job, here are the largest companies in Australia – the companies that are most likely to have good job openings for you:

1. BHP Billiton

This mining and petroleum company operates in multiple countries around the world but is headquartered in Australia. It began way back in the 1800s, and has since grown to become one of the largest companies in Australia – with roughly $72.1 billion in revenue last year alone.

2. Rio Tinto

Yet another mining company earns a high ranking on this list! This Australian company has been around for 140 years, and operates on six continents – extracting gold, diamonds, copper, aluminum, and other industrial metals from the ground. Revenues last year hovered around the $59.8 billion mark!

3. Wesfarmers

As one of Australia’s largest public companies and retailers, it should come as no surprise to find it on this list. Its employees number around 220,000, and the company owns Target, Kmart, and Coles. Revenue for 2014 was roughly $58.4 billion.

4. Woolworths Limited

Woolworths is another massive retailer, operating in not just supermarkets, but also petrol, home improvement products, and liquor. It is Australia’s largest retailer (by both sales and market capitalization) with revenues last year of roughly $55.5 billion.

5. National Australia Bank

As the largest of the four big Australian banks, National Australia Bank offers services to more than 12 million people in New Zealand, the United States, Asia, the UK and, of course, Australia. The bank’s revenues hovered around $48.5 billion last year.

6. Commonwealth Bank of Australia

Second only to the National Australia Bank in sales, market capitalization and revenue, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia is one of the oldest banks in the country. It employs over 44,000 people around the world, and its revenues for last year were roughly $47.1 billion.

7. Westpac Bank of Australia

Westpac offers more than 2,900 ATMs and 1,200 retail branches in Australia alone, and it is the largest branch network in the country. Though only founded in 1982, it has grown quickly, earning revenues of roughly $42.3 billion in 2014 alone.

8. Australian and New Zealand Banking Group

More commonly known as ANZ, this is the third largest bank in Australia and the largest in New Zealand. They were ranked the "most sustainable global bank" in 2007 and in 2008 by the Dow Jones, and offer services in more than 30 countries around the world. Revenue for 2014 hovered around the $40 billion mark.

9. Telstra

Internet connections, mobile phones, landlines, television and entertainment are what earn Telstra such high revenues in Australia – $25.6 billion in 2014 alone.

10. Xstrata Holdings

Though Xstrata is actually a Swiss company, its operations in Australia are vast. It is a major coal producer, as well as a special alloy of iron ore and chromium called ferrochrome. They are one of the largest companies on the LSE, and their revenues for 2014 alone were roughly $23.1 billion.
