Top 10 Rich List UK: 2014 Edition

The United Kingdom has one of the largest economies in the world and despite recent economic challenges it still remains an economic powerhouse with more Billionaires per capita than any other country in the world. However, the majority of these billionaires are not British or even permanent residents in the UK. The continued prosperity of London is what attracts them. No matter where they were born, or what citizenship they hold, here is a list of the 10 richest people in the UK.

10. Roman Abramovich: $14.2 Billion

The Russian born owner of Chelsea Football Club is probably the most controversial person on this list. Abramovich is a Russian oligarch with close ties to the Russian government. This affiliation is noted as the main reason behind his vast wealth as it allowed him to buy large amounts of state owned businesses, mainly steel, gold, and oil, at rock bottom prices. It has also been proved in court that he has used violence and intimidation to get what he wants. So basically he is monstrously rich, powerful and scary. But like every shady, rich character he has lots of toys. For example he owns his own 767 airplane and the largest yacht in the world. And let’s not forget his most famous toy, Chelsea F.C.

9. The Duke of Westminster: $14.34 Billion

The Duke of Westminster also known as Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor is certainly a British blue blood through and through. Despite being the 9 richest person in the UK, he is actually the 3 richest person born in the UK. The Dukes wealth doesn’t come from the shady selling off of state assets; instead he inherited a huge amount of land and with a bit of business savviness created an empire. He is now the largest and wealthiest landlord in the UK. The fact that he is an aristocrat who inherited a large part of his land in the UK is questionable to some. But he must be given some credit for turning his inheritance into a multinational business.

8. Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli: $14.8 Billion

Although they spend the majority of their time in Switzerland, the wife of Ernesto Bertarelli is still a British citizen and as a member of the immensely wealthy Bertarelli family is now also extremely wealthy. The company’s wealth is primarily derived from the pharmaceutical company Serono founded by Ernesto’s grandfather. However, Ernesto’s shift of focus to biotechnology and discovery of the hormone used to treat female infertility is what really started making them money. Wife Kirsty is actually a former Miss UK and has happily lived a life of luxury as a member of this wealthy dynasty since 2000.

Norwegian born John Fredriksen made his fortune during the Iran- Iraq war managing to take advantage of Iranian desperation. Using this ‘good fortune’ he has gradually built up the world’s largest oil tanker fleet. As to whether or not that was primarily for tax reasons, well you can be the judge of that yourself.

5. David and Simon Reuben: $15.8 Billion

The Indian born business men who immigrated to Britain in the 1950’s are notorious for keeping their affairs very private. Having various business interests in Russia, the brothers crossed paths with previously mentioned Roman Abramovich in the early 2000’s. However, the brothers decided to leave the Russian market as they deemed it too volatile. Interestingly, a large amount of their wealth is in liquid assets which is unusual for most billionaires.
