Top 10 Things to do When You are Bored at Work

There are some jobs that keep you so busy, you have no time to breathe. However, in most jobs there will come a time when you find yourself with nothing to do. This may particularly be the case if you work in an office behind a desk all day long. Next time you find yourself bored and racking your brain for something to do, why not try some of the following ideas.

1. Have a Read

Whether it’s a novel you’ve brought with you or something online, try spending the time reading something. Catch up on what’s been happening around the world or engross yourself in something that will give you a laugh. Some good ones to give you a bit of a chuckle are The Onion and HuffPost Weird News.

2. Visit a Different Department

If there is nothing going on in the area you’re working in, why not go visit a friend in a different department. By helping out with the little tasks they need done not only are you staying productive you just might learn something new as well.

3. Listen to a Podcast

Podcasts can be both entertaining and educational. Try jumping on to either iTunes, BBC or Ted Radio Hour. Even if you’re not listening to something that is going to broaden your mind it’s not like your work colleagues will be able to tell.

4. Have a Laugh

If reading isn’t really your thing you could spend time looking at funny things instead. There are plenty of websites full of hilarious photos and videos that will definitely make you giggle. Try checking out Awkward Family PhotosPeople of Walmart or YouTube.

5. Look for a New Job

If sitting around with nothing to do is becoming a daily habit and it’s starting to drive you up the wall, then it may be a sign you should start searching for something else. Go on the Internet and see what other job opportunities are available. Maybe it’s time to pursue the career you’ve always wanted.

6. Organise Yourself

People say that being organised can help you become more productive so, why not give it a go. Start out by giving some order to the chaos that is your desk. Next clean out your inbox and write yourself a general to-do list. You can then go a step further and organise your goals. Write down things you’ve always wanted to achieve in life and maybe it will help you get there.

7. Learn Something New

Ever had a topic you wanted to know more about? Then why not spend this time fulfilling that goal. Just type whatever you’re after into Google and watch time fly. You can also head to websites like Intstructables and eHow to learn some new skills.

8. Play a Game

We all need to relax sometimes and one way to do that can be by playing games. The Internet has plenty of free games available for you to choose from. If you love retro games Google allows you to have 24 hour access to the classic Pacman game whenever you want.

9. Make a New Friend

You probably already have a few friends at your workplace but why not make some more. Strike up a conversation with someone you wouldn’t normally talk to and you just might find a new best friend. Being more in touch with those around you and what’s happening in your workplace can also look good to the big boss upstairs.

Just because you don’t have the time to leave your desk and head to the gym that doesn’t mean you can’t work out during the day. There are plenty of simple exercises you can do such as using your desk to do some tricep dips or push-ups. You can also use your chair for squats.

When you get bored at work it can seem like time has suddenly come grinding to a halt. Filling in these mundane moments by doing something from the list above can stop you from looking at the clock and make that time fly. It will make your time at the office more enjoyable.
