Top 10 UK Universities for Fashion in 2015

Fashion designers must go to university if they’re going to get the professional and business skills required to flourish in their chosen field. Whilst there are many universities that offer fashion design, there are only a few that really shine on an application. If you want to study fashion design in the UK, take a look at these top ten universities.

1. Central Saint Martins

Based in London, this school has taught Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, and Phoebe Philo, amongst others. It offers a range of programmes, including form textiles and menswear. The British government subsidises part of the tuition for some students.

2. Kingston University

Kingston is another London-based school. Notable designers produced from this school include Felipe Baptista and Sophie Hulme. It teaches a curriculum that explores every different facet of design. It also has an internship programme and a study-abroad programme for students who want to gain practical work experience.

3. Royal College of Art (RCA)

RCA is a graduate-only school in London. Ossie Clark and Christopher Bailey are just some of the people to have studied here. It offers a selection of MA programmes including goldsmithing, jewellery, textiles, and womenswear. The school also has access to a range of the leading fashion houses in London.

4. Istituto Marangoni

The Istituto Marangoni is a worldwide university with a campus in London, as well as Milan and Paris. Tuition fees are much lower than other leading fashion schools. Here you can learn about the business side of fashion, such as acquisition and brand management.

5. London College of Fashion

This school is part of the University of the Arts London collaboration. Whilst it also looks into fashion itself, students here are more likely to learn about fashion marketing and journalism over anything else. Jimmy Choo and Rupert Sanderson (at Cordwainers College) are some of the big names to have studied here.

6. University of Westminster

The University of Westminster has produced the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Sophie Dean. Unlike the other universities on this list, you’ll also find this university with a world-class fashion journalism programme.

7. De Montfort University

De Montfort University is a university in Leicester, England. It offers six different fashion degrees and has reasonably low tuition fees for international students. This is an ideal choice for students looking to get away from London.

8. Falmouth University

Falmouth University specialises in fashion marketing. If you’re more interested in the marketing aspect of fashion, this is the perfect option for you. Tuition fees are lower than the London universities, and you’ll avoid the hustle and bustle of the capital.

9. University of Central Lancashire

With a whopping thirteen different fashion degrees to choose from, you’re spoiled for choice here. This university is well-known in the UK for its strong student culture and the ability for students to associate themselves with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

10. Nottingham Trent University

Already thinking of your future career prospects? Nottingham Trent University is the perfect university for you. It boasts a graduate employment rate of 90% across its eleven fashion degree choices. Whilst not as glamorous as the other university choices on this list, it’s good for students who are already thinking about the long term.

Remember to check with the specific universities when it comes to tuition fees. You want to make sure that you meet the requirements and you can afford to attend before getting your hopes up. Most universities have a student helpline prospective students can call. Before you choose a specific university, make sure you consider the lifestyle and the community. After all, you will have to commit three or four years of your life to your studies.
