Top 10 US Universities for Fashion 2015

So, you think you have what it takes for a career in fashion, do you? Good for you! It’s a highly competitive field, but one with limitless job opportunities. With the right education, you could go very far in the business!

But first, you need an education! Here are the top schools in the US to attend to earn a degree in fashion:

1. Parsons The New School for Design

Located in Greenwich Village, New York City, Parsons is the top-ranked fashion school in the country, and is one of the top schools in the world as well! Many of the world’s most famous designers came through Parsons, including Donna Karan, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, and Anna Sui. It offers more than 25 undergrad programs in not just fashion but also art and design. Tuiton fees range from $20,000 and $21,000 per term.

2. Fashion Institute of Technology

Also located in New York, FIT (as is it also known) is the second best university for fashion in the United States. More than 10,000 students are enrolled in FIT, which offers 17 different majors in fashion, design, and art. The university is also where a lot of the research on store positioning and store branding is done. Tuition fees for NYC residents range from $2,250 and $5,200 per semester, and $6,750 and $10,100 for out-of-state students.

3. Savannah College of Art and Design

Located in both Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, this is the third best college in the country for those who want to study fashion and art. SCAD enrolls more than 11,000 students every year, offering degrees in art, fine arts, architecture, teaching, and urban design. The college even has a campus in France for students to study abroad! Annual tuition fees cost $34,500 for undergrad students and $35,500 for graduates.

Located in sunny Los Angeles, FIDM is the ideal university for students who want to study fashion and design. Notable attendees of FIDM include Amanda Bynes, Lil Debbie, Santino Rice, Lubov Azria, and Lauren Conrad. For those living on the West Coast, this is the university to attend! Tuition fees for an associate’s degree cost $33,000 per academic year.

5. Pratt Institute

Located in Brooklyn, New York, the Pratt Institute is one of the top schools for not just fashion but also architecture, graphic design, and interior design. It is a private college, so tuition fees are much higher than the other universities on the list. But Pratt is ranked as one of the top 20 colleges in the north, and is renowned for its groundbreaking fashion research. Annual tuition fees cost about $44,600.

6. Rhode Island School of Design

The RISD is located in Providence, Rhode Island, and is ranked among the top colleges in the world for the fine arts, fashion, and design. It competes with Yale to be the top-ranked art school in the United States, with only about 2,000 students attending every year. Students can choose from 16 undergrad and 17 graduate majors. Annual tuition fees cost about $45,500.

7. Iowa State University

ISU, or Iowa State, is one of the few state universities that excel in the field of art and fashion. The college offers over 112 master’s degree programs, 100 bachelor’s degree programs, and 83 doctorate-level programs. Thankfully, tuition at this university is fairly low—up to $11,000 for out-of-state students and up to $4,500 for in-state students.

8. Academy of Art University

Once known as the Academy of Art University, this San Francisco-based private college is another excellent one to attend if you want to obtain a degree in fashion. It is the largest privately-owned art, fashion, and design school in the country, and it offers courses in interior design, fashion, the fine arts, and graphic design. Famous alumni include Heidi Montag and Lauren Conrad. The average cost for undergraduate tuition is $22,000 per semester.

9. Kent State University

Located in Kent, Ohio, this university offers more than 300 degree programs—including a number in the fine arts, fashion, and design. It is ranked as one of the top 200 universities in the world! Annual tuition for Ohio residents costs about $20,000, and about $28,000 for out-of-state students.

10. Drexel University

This private college, located in Philadelphia, offers up to 70 undergrad and graduate programs, with over 100 master’s, bachelor’s, and doctorate degrees in a wide range of subjects. It is one of the best schools for art and fashion in the country and, best of all, students participating in the co-op program are able to gain hands-on PAID work experience before graduation. Annual tuition for a full-time 4 to 5-year program costs about $15,000.
