Top 10 Ways to De-Stress on Weekends

We all know that we should stress less and enjoy ourselves more, if not for our short-term happiness then for our long-term health and well-being. Stress can lead to less serious conditions such as stomach problems and headaches and more life-threatening issues such as heart disease, depression and diabetes. Even though we get a break in the form of our two day weekends, many of us are most likely spending that time away from the office feeling stressed out and pressured. Here are the top 10 ways to de-stress on the weekends so you can stay healthy, happy and return to the office as a new you on a Monday morning.

1. Grab Your Yoga Mat

Whether you’re a Saturday morning regular at your local yoga studio or have never tried a class, you can benefit from all the good stuff that yoga has to offer. Yoga is believed to help regulate blood pressure and boost your immune system. Try a drop-in class in your city or just buy a mat and find a free online video to bust some moves in your own living room and instantly de-stress.

2. Sweat It Out

If yoga’s not your thing and you’re more of a cardio person, that’s still okay. Breaking a sweat in any way -- whether it is running, playing a sport, or taking a dance class -- is another important aspect of healthy living. Working out helps with longevity, prevents heart problems and helps you maintain a healthy weight. If those aren’t enough reasons, exercise will make you happier, and this will help you transition from a busy work week to the relaxing weekend.

3. Host a Potluck Dinner

Hosting a dinner party on a Saturday night can be more stressful than fun if you have to cook, clean your house, and so on. Why don’t you reap the same health benefits of socializing by hosting a potluck dinner instead? This will eliminate stress as you only have to make (or buy -- no one will know) one part of the meal. You could also make it even more entertaining by suggesting a theme like Mexican or an all-American barbeque.

4. Try a New Recipe

There are few things more relaxing than spending a long Sunday afternoon in front of the stove, watching over a pot of soup that will give you leftovers for a week. Try a new recipe and reap the meditative benefits of cooking. Invite some friends over or just enjoy this precious time alone.

5. Do Nothing for One Hour

Okay, not exactly nothing -- you can use one hour every weekend to curl up with a cup of coffee and a magazine, a good book, or even watch a movie. Choosing some "me" time is a good idea especially when we spend so much of our time answering emails and dealing with others. The goal here is for you to relax.

6. Go for Long Walks

Walking is a very good form of exercise that can even prevent cancer and boost your mood. You could also make good use of this time and walk to all of your weekend errands instead of driving if possible, or just explore an area of your city or town that you never had the time to visit.

7. Watch a Sitcom

You know that you feel better when you laugh, so what better way to spend your Saturday night than staying at home watching a sitcom, whether it’s an old favorite or a new recommendation from a friend.

8. Have Coffee with an Old Friend

As mentioned above, friends play a significant role in a healthy lifestyle. What better way to de-stress on the weekend than catching up with an old friend that you haven’t seen in a while?

9. Do Chores in the Morning

Getting your chores out of the way in the early hours will free up your afternoons to have fun and relax. Putting chores or errands off won’t help you de-stress because you will just spend your time worrying that you should be doing them.

10. Make a To-Do List

While making a to-do list may sound too much like work and not like a way to relax, it can help you de-stress if something is on your mind. Write down any ideas for your upcoming meeting or presentation or make a list of what you have to do next week. That way, you can get it out of your mind and enjoy your two days off.
