We live in a period where distractions are present all the time, 24/7. Even while you’re sleeping, your phone or television can easily distract you from getting much needed rest. Information can also serve as a distraction, if you are bombarded by it.
Self-management deals with using as little tools as possible to make one’s self better. An individual who has strong self-management skills is reliable, durable and consistent. He sets a superior example at the office for others to follow, showing a display of control over hectic work environments.
What Are Signs Of Ineffectiveness?
An individual who lacks self-management is ineffective. This means that one’s effort does not match the results being churned out. Below are signs that you need to sharpen your self-management skills:
- Decrease in output
- Increase in stress levels
- Compensation for loss of time
- Lack of goals (too much focus on small tasks)
A Scientific Approach to Self-Management
Self help books are vague. You need a new way of viewing your self-management concerns. The science of self-management revolves around the details of human qualities. By knowing your instincts and natural tendencies, you can minimise errors and boost productivity.
Auditory tonal involves sounds and hearing. This is related to the words we hear and the way people say those words to us. When it comes to conflict resolution, you need to talk through a problem. In other words, you don’t know what you mean until you hear yourself say it. Because of this, it would be smart to be selective of background noise that you think you’ve grown accustomed to, but is actually distracting you.
Auditory digital is more internal. It’s still about words, but written down. This includes the logic behind words and the way they look on the page. If you have strong auditory digital skills you can write a shopping list and leave it at home but still remember everything on it. If someone gives you instructions and you can’t take notes you’ll struggle to recall the details. If this is your weakness, ask people to wait while you write down the important points.
Kinaesthetic simultaneously deals with the external (touch) and the internal (feelings). This human quality shows that your environment is critical. You can’t work in an uncomfortable environment no matter how attractive it is. You have to feel comfortable with the texture of your clothes, the chair you sit in and the items you work with. By increasing your comfort levels, you can boost concentration and contentment.
Starting Your Day Right
Self-management masters are not perfect. Their day could go horribly wrong midway, just like everyone else. However, such individuals prevent complications in the day by starting it right.
Knowing what you should be doing every morning is a great way to stay focused. One of the issues about checking your email during this time is that it tends to dictate which tasks you will be doing for the rest of the day. I’m not saying you should never check your inbox until after lunch. By then you might have missed a few important notifications.
What you should be doing is prepping your mind for the entire day as a whole instead of fixating yourself on one task. Doing this can lower the risk of doing things you shouldn’t be focusing on.
