Website Security and Privacy Seals for Your Ecommerce Site

Ecommerce has become increasingly popular over the recent years. Online marketplaces such as eBay, Etsy, Amazon and Yahoo! Shopping have made it easy for consumers to buy products quickly and conveniently. However, this has also resulted in an increase in credit card fraud and identity theft. As a result, people have become wary about carrying out transactions online. This is why it is very important to display security and privacy seals on your ecommerce site. These seals show that your site has been authenticated by a recognised third party, thus giving assurance to your customers.

There are several categories of security and privacy seals you can choose from:

1. Reliability seals

Some people create sites with fake names and addresses with the aim of stealing people’s credit card details. Reliability seals assure you that the identity of the business is valid. This means that the business is registered and the contact details provided are genuine. You can get a reliability seal from programs such as Comodo, BBB and SquareTrade. However, these seals do not guarantee that a business will offer good service, or use your data in a certain way.

2. Security seals

Security seals are normally used on sites which handle sensitive customer data through web forms. This seal shows that a site has Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protection, meaning that hackers cannot access your personal details. To confirm if a site has an SSL certificate, look for “https://” in the web address. Some of the security seals available include GeoTrust, Comodo and Verisign.

3. Vulnerability seals

Vulnerability seals show that a site is scanned monthly, weekly or daily for security risks. This ensures that loopholes that could be taken advantage of by hackers are eliminated. SquareTrade and HackerSafe are some of the most popular vulnerability seals in the market.

4. Privacy seals

These seals assure customers that any personal information submitted will be used with discretion. Businesses usually go through an elaborate certification process before being issued with a privacy seal. Privacy seal programs such as ESRB Privacy, BBB and TRUSTe not only monitor data collection, but also its usage. If you feel that your personal information is being used inappropriately, you can raise your grievances with the relevant program.

5. Consumer rating seals

Consumer rating seals such as Yahoo! Shopping, Shopping.com and Shopzilla are based on reviews from shoppers about a retailer. These seals will give shoppers an idea of the quality of service to expect when dealing with an online retailer. Though a positive consumer rating shows that the retailer in question can be trusted, it does not assure customers of their privacy and security.

When it comes to ecommerce, assuring customers of their privacy and security can make a difference between making and losing a sale. Take time to explore these different seals and get your site authenticated appropriately. Building trust with your customers will give them peace as they carry out transactions on your site. In addition, you are likely to attract more shoppers, thus greatly enhancing the profitability of your business.
