What Motivates Employees to Work Apart From Money

Did you know that money and bonuses are not the top factors that motivate employees to work? In fact, it’s not surprising that money is not even in the top 3 of the list of things that motivate employees as it has no positive effect on the employee performance.

In this video from RSA Animate, Daniel Pink talks about what really motivates us to work and the importance of salaries in terms of employee satisfaction. Referring to examples from previous studies, the speaker argues that money could be a motivator in a strange way. He confirms that if you don’t pay people enough they won’t be motivated. So the important thing to remember here is this paradox: ‘The best way to use money as a motivator is to pay people enough so that they take the issue of money off the table’. Only this way you may notice the change in employee’s productivity.

According to Daniel Pink, these are the 3 most important motivating factors for every employee:

  1. Autonomy – people want to have control over their work.
  2. Mastery – people want to become better at what they do.
  3. Purpose – people want to have a goal and be part of something.
