Why We Need a Universal Degree in Career Attitude Adjustment

Recently, I met a former high school friend and we were discussing our former school mates and their current occupations. After mentioning quite a number of them, we realized that they weren’t necessarily doing what their academic credentials depicted. In fact, according to my estimation, roughly 80% of them are pursuing what I would call ’odd’ career paths so to speak. I then recalled the resounding number my friends that are in a similar predicament. And then it hit me. We definitely need to have a mandatory curriculum particularly in higher education institutions that prepares students psychologically for such predicaments. I call it the Universal Degree in Career Attitude Adjustment.

Why Universal?

Well, in light of recent globalization efforts, countries worldwide are rapidly embracing the aspect of regional economies. Therefore, graduates should also be educated on the varying operational mechanisms of different job markets. That way, graduates can fine-tune their skills to suit whichever economic situation in the world they’re exposed to.

Which Career Attitudes need Some Major Adjustments?

Many of us were brought up in an educational curriculum that emphasized on the formal aspect of careers. However, excessive formality has proven to bring about a lot of disappointment particularly in this era of rampant unemployment. Plus, as we all know, job markets keep changing. Therefore, to strike a balance between academic parameters and job market forces, the following career attitudes need some serious adjustments:

#1 Your Initial Academic Credentials Ultimately Determine your Career Destiny 

Woe unto you if you run out of employment options regarding your initial career choice and you decide to wallow in self-pity:

  • These are the kind that keep singing the unemployment song to soothe their crushed monotonous and excessively formal career hopes and dreams.
  • You cannot afford to think in one direction. You’ve got to have a variety of career contingency measures in place. For instance, if being a saloonist hasn’t landed you any job, then branch out into hospitality careers with high demand like being a masseuse or something like that. This not only gives you options, but it also broadens your prospects of job opportunities and reduces chances of unemployment.

#2 You’ve GOT to be Employed to make it in your Career

Many graduates today have this inbred mentality it’s either I get a job or else I fail to succeed. But let’s accept reality for once and agree on the fact that more graduates are being churned out than the few job opportunities that are available at the moment:

  • So what happens to the numerous graduates that don’t clinch jobs. Did they waste their time getting educated? Moreover, is employment the sole purpose of education? Then in that case, we should be treating education like a lottery contest and dismissing the unemployed as losers.
  • However, education is mean’t to enhance lives and employment doesn’t necessarily hold that monotonous benefit. Even education itself came about as a result of people who wanted to enhance humanity.
  • Therefore, if your sole career focus is on employment, then you’re a very selfish person to say the least.

#3 Academic Excellence Will Automatically Bring About Attractive Perks and Lucrative Job Positions

These days, it’s very easy to list a number of seemingly academically incompetent CEOs and managers that shape today’s economies. While some would naively blame it on corruption, others would simply dismiss life as being unfair:

  • But get this, academic credentials don’t necessarily determine work effectiveness. In fact, many employers today have woken up to the fact that there’s more to an employee’s character than academic credentials.
  • Then again, in a world where dishonesty thrives, many universities have lost integrity and thus cases of cooked up grades and bought degrees are rampant. This means that the only foolproof method that can be used to audit employees today is their work performance. And unfortunately, if your academic credentials are mere hype, it will be quite easy to notice.

#4 Being a Graduate Makes you Special

I really get baffled at times when I encounter haughty university graduates that can’t take advice from a less academically qualified person. However, when it comes to the job market, the rules of life are unbiased:

  • Yes, it might be argued that academic credentials give you an added advantage, but we’ve got to understand that education about opportunities isn’t confined to the four walls of a lecture hall. Ask yourself, why is it that the richest people aren’t necessarily the most educated? It’s all about grasping opportunities when they present themselves.
  • There has always been this misconception that as long as graduates study, then someone somewhere is preparing job opportunities for them. But many graduates get a rude shock when they find out that there are so many careerists like them out there.
  • Consequently, this brings about a stiff sense of competition and they’re humbled by the vast amounts of talent out there that are better than them. It’s therefore really important to stay humble and realize that the world out there is unbiased. Whether educated or not, it all boils down to exploiting the right opportunities at the right place and at the right time.

Having said that, it’s really sad that most careerists today are pursuing dreams just to fulfill people’s expectations. But in this life, you’re the captain of your ship and there comes a time when you have to make the call. How long will it take before you make a career attitude adjustment and decide to shape your own destiny? Will you explore life and achieve what you want or will you become a mere product of people’s expectations? That’s up to you to decide..
