Typos are a big no-no on resumes and are considered to be unacceptable to most recruiters. They can leave a bad first impression, make you look unprofessional and not at all interested in the job. Most people who have typos on their resumes are usually rejected right away but as research proves employers shouldn’t dismiss these job candidates straight away.
In reality, such mistakes don’t necessarily imply that the jobseeker is careless or that he isn’t paying attention to detail. Making a few minor errors in writing is a mistake anyone could make, and even employers fall into the trap when writing their job advert. Likewise, these mistakes shouldn’t diminish the value of a job candidate as they don’t necessarily mean their skills or intelligence are questionable.

Perhaps this becomes clearer when you take the time to look at the reason as to these typos are made. Psychologist Tom Stafford, who studies typos says that such mistakes are easy to miss, not because you are stupid or careless but because what you are doing is actually very smart. As Stafford says “when you are writing, you’re trying to convey meaning, it’s a very high level task.”
Since you are trying to create a message other people will understand it’s easy to overlook typos. Even when you go back to check your work two or three times, you can still miss out the mistakes you have made because you already know what it is that you are trying to say.
As Stafford explains, “when we’re proofreading our own work, we know the meaning we want to convey. Because we expect that meaning to be there, it’s easier for us to miss when parts (or all) of it are absent. The reason we don’t see our own typos is that what we see on the screen is competing with the version that exists in our heads”.
Most of the times, this happens as a result of your attempt to write everything down so that you don’t leave any important information out of the resume. As such, one might say typos are made because you are very eager to get the job and thrilled to get your ideas on paper. In a way, this makes you look passionate about your work and excited about the prospect of getting the job.
Also, let’s face it, no matter how hard you try to create the perfect resume it will never be as good as you want it to be. While this doesn’t mean you are allowed to make spelling or grammar mistakes, you shouldn’t be disappointed when your resume reaches the recruiters and has a few typos in it. So give some credit to yourself and try proofreading your resume with a fresh mind. Then you will have more chances to spot those small mistakes that are invisible to the eye in one read.
Most career advisors would tell you that to get the job you need to craft the perfect resume. But you will be surprised to learn that those who actually get it don’t always have the best resumes. Some employers do recognize and appreciate your attempt and prefer to pay attention to what is important on the document. Unless you are applying for a proofreader or copy/editor position, those mistakes won’t always hurt your chances of getting the job.

So if you find out that you have sent out a resume with a typo, you don’t have to send an updated version of the same document to employers. That’s like admitting you have made a mistake. After all, if they are really impressed with your qualifications and skills, sooner or later you will know. They will call you in for that interview.
