With Job Corps There Is Hope

One of the ever prevailing problems in the world is unemployment. Even in America, which is considered to be the land of milk and honey, unemployment seems to be ever present. Although unemployment rates in the US have decreased from 6.7% at the end of last year to around 6.1% last month, the rate is still high compared to the years before the economic meltdown in 2009.

Although unemployment rates in the US have decreased from 6.7% at the end of last year to around 6.1% last month, the rate is still high compared to the years before the economic meltdown in 2009.

The relatively high unemployment rate shouldn’t come as a surprise though considering the lack of skills and education that the majority of the youth are facing. What possible future could these young people have? Many of this youth are out of school, homeless, former foster children and juvenile delinquents. However, with Job Corps, there is hope.

Benefits of Job Corps

For those who are unfamiliar with Job Corps, it is a program of the US Department of Labor and is better known as the nation’s largest technical training and education program. It dates back to 1964 and currently produces around 60,000 students a year equipped with the necessary experience to take on jobs.

These delinquents and jobless youngsters can learn skills and tools of trade from Job Corps which has around 125 centers in 48 states. And it’s not just available to young people; it is available for anyone categorized in the low-income bracket. The programs offered by Job Corps cover over 100 occupations such as auto maintenance, health care, hospitality, construction, culinary arts, information technology and more.

Local employers consider Job Corps as a preferred source for skilled talent

Several local employers actually prefer the students coming from Job Corps for several skilled job openings. Employers like Drexel University College of Medicine, Spectrum Health Services and more are looking for clinical medical assistants, nursing assistants and medical technicians that are products of Job Corps.

It is not surprising that these employers would turn to Job Corps first considering the training that the students get. The students are not only provided work-based learning and on-the-job training, students are also taught communication, problem solving, leadership, teamwork and discipline. Although these students have failed in the traditional education system, they are given a second chance to improve and develop their skills.

Over 80% of Job Corps students were placed in jobs

Looking for a job after graduation is always challenging. But with of 80% Job Corps graduates landing reputable jobs, these delinquents and less privileged people are given a fighting chance to work their way up to a better life. They are able to carve a respectable and decent life for themselves as mechanics, pastry chefs, nursing assistants and more. There are even some people who came from Job Corps who continued on to become doctors, judges and entrepreneurs.

What Job Corps does is more than just giving a chance to a better quality of life to less fortunate individuals. It also utilizes one of the world’s most prized resources which is human capital. The global economy is competitive enough as it is and every person can contribute to helping the economy through his or her talents.

It is without question that what Job Corps does is heroic to put it mildly. Giving the underprivileged a chance to improve their lives is indeed commendable. And not only that, Job Corps also gives back to society by optimizing the use of human capital as well as developing needed skills and talents for certain specialized jobs. What would have been a bleak future turned out to be a hopeful one thanks to Job Corps. Job Corps to the rescue!
