Working as a Canadian Border Services Agency Officer

Working as a Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) Officer, you will be the initial point of contact for any travelers or goods arriving on Canadian soil. It is the responsibility a CBSA Officer to protect the security of Canada and its citizens, while obliging with the free movement of people and goods. There are an estimated 200,000 immigrants and refugees entering Canadian borders each year and it is the duty of CBSA officers to maintain the security of the country. CBSA officers can be employed at various facilities, these are: highway, air, marine, rail locations and postal facilities.

 

The main requirements that individuals must meet in order to become a CBSA Officer are the following:

  • Obtain a secondary school diploma

  • Complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course

  • Complete the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course

  • According to the Canada Labor Code part II and the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations part XVI, all applicants must have and maintain a valid Standard First Aid Certification

  • Holder of a valid driver’s license

  • Able to travel within Canada for employment purposes

 

The salary for a CBSA officer ranges between $59,518 and $66,564. The salary bracket for CBSA officer trainee is between $55,133 and $61,570. Other benefits available for individuals who take up this post include the following: Public Services Health Care Plan, Public Services Dental Care Plan and Pensions and Benefits.

 

Qualified CBSA officers are able to pursue a career in management, intelligence or investigation – amongst many others.
