Working as a Health Care Assistant in Peru

The healthcare sector in Peru is in demand for skilled, qualified, and able nursing/health care assistants. There are numerous volunteer opportunities for individuals who hold the relevant qualifications and wish to gain a variety of practical medical experiences, and there are also many career opportunities available for individuals who wish to work in the health care sector on a permanent or full time basis.

Below we provide the basic requirements needed to become an assistant or volunteer to a doctor in Peru. We also list the main activities and tasks expected of eligible candidates seeking an assistant/volunteering role.

Main activities:

  • Visit clinics and local hospitals and provide preventative health care and education

  • Learn about the general practice of medicine in Peru

  • Assist with check-ups

  • Assist with minor medical procedures such as securing wounds

  • Provide vaccinations

  • Assist with public health campaigns

  • Take blood pressures, heart rates, temperatures

  • Cleaning hospital wards including the sterilization of equipment


Requirements to satisfy:

  • Excellent knowledge of the English language

  • Good proficiency in Spanish

  • Be a medical student or graduate for a Bachelor’s degree in nursing/medicine

  • Have a keen interest in medicine in developing countries

  • Maintain a positive and motivated attitude

  • Volunteer positions are unpaid, however living and food expenses are usually provided for
