Working for the Police in Latvia

A career in the police force in Latvia is a rewarding, yet challenging profession. The police in Latvia are governed by the government, meaning that all police employees fall under the scope of public sector workers. The employment benefits of becoming a police officer are numerous, and careers within the police force are subsequently competitive.

The role of the police in Latvia includes but is not limited to:

  • Protect the life, health, rights, freedoms, property and public interests of residents in Latvia

  • Control and observe regulations

  • Assist the public

  • Criminal investigations

  • Work to prevent and deter criminal activity

  • Develop help and support programs

Ranks of the Latvian Police Force:

  • General

  • Colonel

  • Lieutenant Colonel

  • Major

  • Captain

  • First Lieutenant

  • Junior Lieutenant

  • First Sergeant

  • Sergeant

  • Corporal

  • Student

  • Constable

Requirements to satisfy to become a police officer in Latvia:

  • Applicants but be over 18 years of age, and less than 35 years

  • Candidates must hold Latvian citizenship

  • Proficiency in Latvian

  • Applicants cannot have a criminal record

  • Must be mentally and physically capable

  • Successful completion of training at the State Police-college in Latvia.
