Working in Portugal’s Public Sector

Portugal public sector
wsj

In Portugal, approximately one fifth of the entire workforce works in Portugal’s public sector. A number of incentives have been introduced to public sector workers, to encourage a greater number of people to find employment within this area.

Those with higher education and qualifications are in a better position to earn a higher salary within the public sector. Nevertheless a number of changes have been made in recent years to improve the overall conditions for public workers.

Advancing in Portugal’s public sector

Between 1999 and 2007, public sector wages grew in line with private sector wages. In more recent years, public sector employees have been known to earn higher wages than their private sector counterparts. Wage progression is one of the many incentives that have been introduced to further encourage individuals to seek employment in this sector.

In addition to the above, there are various Portuguese unions that represent workers in each sector. These unions play an important role for public sector workers and are extremely highly regarded in the country.

Public sector employees include teachers, armed forces, police and other non-direct ministerial employees. There are millions of people employed within the public sector, working either full time, part time or on a flexible working basis.

If you are searching for public sector employment it is important to bear in mind that competition is fierce and the government today is hiring far fewer employees than it was doing in recent years. However as a college or university graduate you will stand a better chance of being hired, although this does not necessarily guarantee that you will find public sector employment.
