If you are in your 30s, you’ve probably already made some decisions about your career. You’ve probably figured out by now that there’s no such thing as an ideal job, as there are troubles and difficulties in every job, you’ve probably figured out what industry you want to work in, and you’ve probably figured out that the only way to success is through self-improvement.
All the lessons you’ve learnt from making mistakes in your twenties have probably left you wondering what’s the next step you should take. The truth is that the world is your oyster and with your experience you could probably succeed at anything you put your mind to, but here are the best career moves you should focus on.
1. Develop Your Leadership Skills
Now is the time to hone those leadership skills. If you want to become a manager or even CEO, you need to focus on developing your leadership skills. Have you ever considered how decisive you sound? Do your colleagues come to you for help? Are you in any way a role model in the office? This article should help you figure out how to develop your leadership skills.
2. Strike Out on Your Own
You probably spent your twenties trying to pay the rent, party and pay off your student loan. You’ve also probably spent your twenties dreaming of what it would be like to start your own business. If you have all the right ideas, and you have a solid business plan now is the time to go for it. You’ve got the brains to avoid any financial disasters, but you are still daring enough to take the plunge.
3. Start Going to Networking Events
Networking events are necessary if you want to pave your way to success, even if you are not looking for a new job, you can still make valuable connections. Getting to know people in your industry means that you are focusing on your career and that you are beginning to understand the different aspects of your industry. This is useful as it may help you become more innovative and creative in your work.
4. Continuing Your Education
There’s really never a wrong time to continue your education, but your thirties is a great time to go back to school. You can acquire new skills and get new qualifications that will help you further down your career. It’s important to decide if you want to further your education in things related to your industry, or if you want to learn something new which should, however, offer a transferable skill.
5. Build a Personal Brand
If you’ve neglected to build a personal brand now is the time to do it. You need to see yourself as more than skills and qualifications if you want to push yourself forward and this is where building your personal brand comes in. Start a blog to share your experiences and your professional opinions on industry news, or create a personal website where you can showcase samples of your best work. Remember to update your content often and to make it engaging.
Reaching your thirties doesn’t mean you should start dreaming about retirement as the next big step in your career. Take risks and don’t be frightened to make changes in your career.
