5 C.S. Lewis Quotes That Will Motivate You To Succeed

Clive Staples Lewis is the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of  fantasy books, beloved by both children and adults alike. Lewis was an acclaimed academic at Oxford University from 1925 through 1954 and then went on to become chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge. Considered by many to be an intellectual giant, he was a successful author, writing and publishing books dealing with life, love, and faith that continue to inspire people throughout the world today.

Lewis had a sharp mind and a keen intellect, and he wasn’t afraid to swim against the current. He was, at times, a controversial figure, questioning the values of his time and drawing his own conclusions. He thumbed his nose at the establishment when it came to defining success, and charted his own path. Let the following quotes from C.S. Lewis inspire and motivate you in charting your path to career success.

1. “Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point.”

If you’re going to achieve anything in this world, you’re going to need to have courage. Courage to stand up for what you believe in, to swim against the tide at times, and to keep going, even when the road ahead looks treacherous. When you hit that testing point that Lewis speaks of-and you will-remember his words, summon your courage, and keep going.

2. “We are what we believe we are.”

If you don’t believe in yourself, you really can’t expect anyone else to believe in you either. Whether it’s applying for a job, asking for a promotion, going off to start your own business, or developing a new product or service, don’t let a lack of confidence hold you back. Take stock of your good qualities and strengths, and maximize them.

3. “Failures, repeated failures, are finger posts on the road to achievement. One fails forward toward success.”

Among the ranks of people who have achieved great things, there is one thing they all had in common, failure. You try, you fail, then try again, and each time you learn a little more about yourself, your talents and abilities, and exactly what it takes in this world to succeed. Don’t be discouraged by failure. Learn from your mistakes, and realize each failure has the potential to get you that much closer to reaching your goal.

4. "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream."

It’s never too late. Wish you had gone to school for a different major or had chosen a different field in which to invest your time? Go on and do it. Don’t get stuck in a rut, doing the same old thing just because it’s what you’ve always done. Believe that nothing is wasted in life, and that all of your experiences, however diverse they may be, can add up to a successful life and career.

5. “We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.”

This is my personal favorite. There’s so much pressure to keep moving up the career ladder, to keep succeeding, but sometimes you have to step back in order to move forward. Taking a job at a lower position, or for less pay or a decrease in status isn’t always a bad thing if it helps you reach your future goals. The road to success isn’t all uphill, but sometimes you need to take the long and winding road to get there.
