5 Ways Drinking Water Can Enhance Your Work Day

According to Billie Lucero, Wellness Coordinator at Humboldt General Hospital:

“Water makes up about two thirds of who we are, and influences 100% of the processes in our body.”

Water may not be one of your favorite drinks. However, it’s a fact that we definitely feel better when we drink enough water. There are several reasons why you should drink water during the day. This article will discuss 5 ways that drinking water can enhance your work day.

1. Mood Enhancer

Drinking an adequate amount of water each day has been shown to effectively improve your mood. If you don’t drink enough water and are dehydrated, that can impact your mood in a negative manner. This mood impacting effect can even happen if you are only mildly dehydrated. So, it is important to ensure that you drink enough water each day. If you want to enhance your mood and work to your optimal potential while adding to the positivity of the office, drink water.

2. Headache Prevention

No one wants to work while experiencing a headache. If you want to naturally prevent headaches, it is important that you stay hydrated and drink water each day. According to Dr. Mark Green, “You’re not going to prevent all headaches.” However, if you pay attention to the signs your body gives, you will be able to “minimize them with headache trigger management.” In addition to getting an adequate amount of sleep and reducing your stress level, staying hydrated by drinking water is one of the major ways that you can prevent and reduce headaches.

3. Energy Booster

A third way that drinking water can enhance your work day is by boosting your energy level. In order for your body to function properly, all of your organs need water. When you are dehydrated, bodily systems begin to slow down and you will feel run down and fatigued. So, make sure that you drink enough water during the day to enhance your daily work routine because you’ll be able to have enough energy to complete all tasks. Don’t turn to artificially flavored energy drinks that are loaded with sugar or caffeinated drinks which are a diuretic. Try to drink as much water as possible each day.

4. Revitalized Awareness

If you want to stay alert and aware all day long at work, it is important to ensure that your brain is functioning at its optimum level. If your brain does not get an adequate amount of oxygen, it will not function properly. Drinking approximately 8 - 10 cups of water each day has been shown to “improve levels of cognitive performance by 30%.” So, if you want to be more alert and precise in your motor skills, then drink water.

5. Focused Concentration

The final reason to drink water each day is that it will greatly increase your focus and concentration level. When you are dehydrated, your brain needs to work overtime in order to help you to concentrate. When you don’t drink enough water, you will experience brain fatigue and brain fog which can then contribute to increased headaches and depression. One of the major components of succeeding in the workplace is to be able to concentrate and focus on completing your daily tasks.

Do you drink enough water each day? If you don’t, have you felt the negative effects, such as negative mood, headaches, low energy, not being alert and low concentration levels?
