The people you work with are pretty important when you consider that you see them more often than you see your own family or friends. Working closely with people 9-5, five days a week can get tricky and stressful sometimes, but it doesn’t have to be full of tension. It’s possible to have a great working relationship with those in your office. Here are 5 ways to bond with your coworkers both inside and outside of the office.

1. Get Chatty
You could send an email to the person sitting in the cubicle next to yours... or you could do something crazy and actually speak to them verbally. Communication is, of course, a significant part of any relationship, and the one you share with your coworkers is no different. Make a point of talking to the people in your office a few times a day, whether you’re asking them a work-related question or checking in about their weekend. Taking an interest in their lives will make you feel closer to them because they, in turn, will ask you about your life, too.
2. Go to Happy Hour
Attending happy hour with your coworkers is a popular form of bonding, and it’s easy to see why. Sharing a pint of beer and a plate of nachos is fun and casual, and a good way to spend time with the people at your company for an hour or two. Just don’t indulge too much or you’ll be known as the person who can’t hold their alcohol, which is not the reputation you want. Hanging out with your coworkers will help your work life. The next time someone asks you to do something you don’t actually want to do, you’ll be more receptive and approach the task more positively since you just spent the previous evening laughing with them over a drink and some greasy food.
3. Propose A Staff Fun Day
Ask your boss or manager if the company can spend one day a year or every six months doing something fun. It could be an afternoon of bowling, games and dinner, or if it’s in the summer it could take place outdoors on a Sunday and people could invite their families. Giving people something to look forward to will inspire more productive workers and will make everyone feel more warm and fuzzy towards the people that populate the office.
4. Bring in a Yoga Teacher
There’s office yoga, sometimes called chair yoga, which is exactly what it sounds like and involves doing yoga stretches and modified poses while you’re sitting at your desk. But you can also hire a yoga teacher to teach a full class during your lunch hour in the office boardroom. Yoga is a great way to bond because you will be laughing at your lack of balance in no time.
5. Celebrate Birthdays With More Than Just Cake
When a birthday rolls around, go ahead and order a cake for everyone to share and sing Happy Birthday. But think about doing something outside the box, too, such as a Secret Santa-type activity where everyone spends 5 dollars on a silly gag gift for the birthday girl or boy. This will inspire some laughs and good times. And we all need more of those in the office.
