A field specific resume highlights aspects of your qualifications and professional workplace experience which will help you demonstrate your unique qualities during the job application process. In today’s current job market more job applicants are creating field specific resumes, while more and more hiring managers are expecting to receive them from prospective employees. Anything that you can do to set yourself apart will help impress the hiring manager and thus get you an interview. There are several questions to ask yourself during the process of crafting the most effective field specific resume. This article will address those specific questions.

1. What is your main objective?

The first question you need to ask is how you define your main career objective. In order to craft the most impressive objective on your resume, you first need to understand what you hope for in your career. Evaluate where you’ve been and what your professional goals are. When you know what path you’ve been on and where you’re headed, you can create the best objective. Remember that the objective is listed at the top of your resume and it should be written in such a way that it immediately catches the attention of the hiring manager so that you will be seen as a viable candidate for the job. For example, if you are a human resource manager, you can write the following: seeking a Human Resource position where I can utilize my management skills to positively impact the staff and increase the workplace productivity.

2. How would you summarize yourself?

It is also important to know yourself as a professional in order to properly summarize your career history to impress the hiring manager. The summary will work in conjunction with the objective. Many times both the objective and summary are combined into one section and the cohesive blended content can be cited. In the summary, you should include a short two to five sentence description of your career experience. For example, if you are a facilities manager, you can cite the following: a facilities manager with excellent communication and leadership skills that has been able to maintain a productive and positive workplace environment.

3. What are your specific skillsets?

Demonstrating how well your specific skillset aligns with the job responsibilities of employment positions in your career field is important. In order to properly showcase your skillset, you first need to fully comprehend your workplace skills and why you’re an asset to an employer. Once you can effectively describe why you would be the best candidate for the job, you can properly cite those skills on your resume. Depending on how you want to craft your field specific resume, you may include your skillset section before your workplace experience or reverse the order. Additionally, you may want to combine both sections together. However, the idea is still the same. You need to demonstrate that you have the skillset to get the job done. Consider the following example. If you are a copywriter, you need certain skills that apply to your career field. Summarize your skillset in one to five sentences and then create a bulleted listing of some specific skills such as: attention to detailexcellent written communication skillsability to research facts and figures and skilled in proofreading.

4. What is your workplace experience?

This is the next question to ask yourself is in regards to your workplace experience. Once again, it is important to include information that specifically corresponds to the job responsibilities for employment in your field. There are a variety of job responsibilities that you need to complete each day. However, when writing a field specific resume, you need to include content with a strategy in mind. It is vital that you highlight that workplace experience which particularly aligns with the responsibilities that you could possibly have to complete in the new employment position. Consider the following example. Depending on your specific career field, your education may matter more than in other fields. For example, a college degree is not necessarily needed for someone working as a production line worker at a factory. However, this employee would need to showcase his specific vocational, workplace or apprentice training. If you are a marketing consultant, your college degree will be important to list in addition to your degree and any educational concentration. Additionally, if you have participated in any training seminars specific to your field, you can create a bulleted listing for those.

Remember to think creatively and write with a strategy in mind. As a landscape architect, you would want to set yourself apart by showcasing your specific skillset and listing a section demonstrating actual landscape projects that you completed. Whatever career field you work in, find the best way to set yourself apart so that the hiring manager will definitely call you in for an interview.
