Sometimes you just feel like your life is falling apart. You get the sense that you are nowhere near reaching the goals that you set for yourself. This is mostly likely to occur when you feel like you are not performing as well as you should. You thought that by now you would have achieved a lot more.
But as humans we want everything to be perfect. We want the ‘dream job’, the big house over the hill, and the plasma TV that is bigger than our wall. Essentially, we want more of what we have got, and at the same time more of what we don’t have. As such it is difficult to identify what we have already achieved and rarely feel proud of it.
In Psychology Today, Amy Morin says that people tend to measure their self-worth in a number of ways that are hazardous to their overall development. Generally, people let their self-worth be determined by these 5 factors:
- Who they are with
- What they do
- How much they have
- What they achieve
- How they look
So, they would probably let their relationship status, what they do for a living and how much money they make determine whether they are successful or not. They may examine their accomplishments, but that usually backfires as people tend to avoid taking risks in case they fail. Lastly, many people choose to measure their success by the way they look which is just as catastrophic as the other 4 factors.
To start looking at life in a more positive way, here are some of the signs that show you are in a better position than you thought:
#1 You Can Change Your Life
The good thing about hitting rock bottom is that you can only go up. From there you get to choose only to do things that help you improve. If you want to move on, you have to weigh up your options and see what you can do that will be in your best interests. Since you can’t let chance decide your future, you need to choose who you want to be. At least you have the opportunity to do it.
#2 You Have a Goal
Perhaps the most important element that sets successful people apart from others is the fact that they have specific goals in place. These are the people who are most likely to stick to their targets no matter how many distractions are banging on their door. At times when you feel you are under-achieving you need to remember that having a goal is the first step to making your dream a reality.
#3 You Had/Have a Job
If you are currently working then you are luckier than many other people out there. While countless jobseekers are still waiting for the perfect opportunity to work; you can proudly say that you have found yours, and you are providing for yourself. Likewise, if you have recently lost your job, this means that you went out of your way and succeeded in becoming someone’s employee and that counts for something.
#4 You Have a Roof Over Your Head
If you have a place to sleep, even if you are living with your parents or sharing a flat with friends, you have already succeeded in something. While you may not feel you are 100 percent independent, you know you have a comfy place to rest when you have the need to. Having a roof over your head makes you rich in a way many people around the world could only dream of.
#5 You Are Trying Your Best
Even when failure hits, you know it is not the end of the world. You know why? Because whatever the case may be, you know you are trying to make things better for yourself and that is what really matters. So what if you don’t own a house or a car yet? When you have a strong sense of self-development, you are always going to be better off than you were yesterday.
#6 You Invest in Knowledge
When you are constantly challenging yourself it is easy to get frustrated and discouraged. But then again this means also means that you are continuously developing yourself albeit with obstacles your way. Chasing knowledge means that you get to learn anything you want and be whoever you want. To do that, you just have to be ready to take the right opportunities that come along both in your career and personal life.
#7 You Have a Strong Support Network
One of the greatest blessings in life is if you have a lot of people around you who love you and respect you for who you are. If you are lucky enough to have this kind of support network, you are more successful than you think. Career-wise, you have also managed to build a strong network of contacts, a fact that gives you the incentive to get back to work again.
Considering that life can be extremely unpredictable, you are doing pretty well even if you think you are getting nowhere. Don’t forget that failures are also part of the adventure and they are there to tell you to keep pushing harder to get out what you want.
