Ariana Grande and 4 Other Celebrity Backlashes

There are the celebrities who play by the rules, and then there are the ones who don’t. There are the celebrities who behave like absolute darlings, and then there are the ones who behave like the antichrist.

There’s always two sides of a coin, and being a celebrity does not shield anyone from megalomania and douchebaggery. And these 5 celebrities can only attest to that.

1. Ariana Grande

When the word donut pops up in a conversation, you automatically – and somewhat stereotypically, might I add – think of two things: police officers and Homer Simpson. However, that list is now slowly growing with a third addition: “Problem” singer Ariana Grande.

Grande, who rose to fame in teen sitcom Victorious, recently made headlines when she was caught on video licking baked donuts when the cashier wasn’t looking at Wolfee Donuts in Lake Elsinore, California.

CCTV footage showed Grande, along with boyfriend/backup dancer Ricky Alvarez, licking donuts that were on display which, according to cashier Mayra Solis, they did not buy. In one instance during the minute-long video, the singer declared that “I hate Americans. I hate America.”

She later apologized for her comments, stating that they were related to the United States’ high obesity rate and “the consequences that it has on our health and society as a whole,” and that she was “EXTREMELY proud to be an American.” In a video apology that followed, Grande said she “kind of missed the opportunity to sincerely apologize” for her poor behavior.

Wolfee Donuts owner Joe Marin wants Grande charged over the incident, but police apparently cannot find anything to charge the singer with under California law, resulting in a narrow escape for the 22-year-old. Meanwhile, fans took to Instagram and Twitter to defend the singer by uploading selfies with superimposed donut emoji’s.

2. Chris Brown

Singer Chris Brown turned himself in to the Wilshire Police Station in Los Angeles in 2009, in connection with a domestic violence felony battery report. Police refused to identify the victim, who had suffered visible facial injuries, but the media quickly put 2 + 2 together when Brown’s then girlfriend and fellow singer Rihanna suddenly cancelled her Grammy Awards performance.

He pleaded not guilty to felony assault and making criminal threats, but was sentenced to five years of probation, six months of community service, and one year of domestic violence counseling.

The story shook the world, resulting in his songs being pulled from several radio stations while a five-year restraining order was retained on Brown, which prohibited him from being within 50 yards of the “Umbrella” singer.

Rihanna has since forgiven Brown for his actions, and they have even recorded a song together in 2011.

3. Kanye West

Not one to shy away from controversy and douchebaggery, Kanye West is perhaps best known for his egomania, talent (pft!) and for interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Swift was about to give her acceptance speech when West ran up and grabbed the microphone off her, and said “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” The camera cuts to Beyoncé who looks shocked and mouths “Oh my God.”

West then returned the mic to the “You Belong with Me” singer after the audience started booing him and was removed from the remainder of the show. Beyoncé won Video of the Year for “Single Ladies” later in the evening and invited Swift back out on stage to finish her speech.

The VMA incident was ultimately just one of many moments that would damage his career and popularity. Singer P!nk reportedly shook her head in disgust while walking past West in the commercial break, while Donald Trump called for a boycott on the “Stronger” hitmaker. Even U.S. President Barack Obama took the opportunity to call him a “jackass.”

4. Justin Bieber

Another controversial douchebag, Justin Bieber made headlines back in 2013 – or at least Bieber’s wiener did. Hehe – see how I rhymed that? Bieber’s wiener! [Giggles like a little boy]

In a video taken by one of his friends on their smartphone, Bieber is shown to piss (excusez-moi – urinate) in a janitor’s mop bucket in the basement of a restaurant.

Okay, you kind of have to forgive him for his antics (he was 19 years old at the time). I mean, we’ve all done some weird, immature sh*t at that age, but that’s not the controversial part. After finishing peeing (note how his bodyguard literally guards his body – and one specific area), Bieber runs up the stairs, grabs a bottle of cleaning spray, sprays Bill Clinton’s picture with it, and yells “F*ck Bill Clinton!”

The video angered the Internet but, like West, it was only one more bad moment on Biebs’ list of bad moments. However, the “Baby” singer reportedly spoke to the former president on the phone and apologized for his behavior.

5. Rob Lowe

Known for his movie roles in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and St. Elmo’s Fire, Rob Lowe started his career in the early 1980s and quickly showed promise in the industry.

However, his name made headlines in 1989 when a leaked sex tape showed him getting his rocks off with a 22-year-old woman and an underage 16-year-old girl (who he insists he thought was at least 21).

While the 16-year-old was of legal age to have sex, she was too young to be filmed. The sex tape became one of the first commercially available celebrity sex tapes, and it ultimately damaged Lowe’s career and public image.

His career eventually rebounded, and he landed leading roles in TV series Brothers & Sisters and Parks and Recreation.

In an interview with TV host/goddess Oprah Winfrey, Lowe revealed that it ended up “being the greatest thing that ever happened to me” because it helped accelerate his sobriety from alcohol abuse.
