How to Be Your True Original Self

Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else" - Judy Garland

Everyone is born with a unique personality and distinct abilities and talents. However, many people go through life without discovering who they really are, thus ending up living unfulfilled and unproductive lives. It is therefore very important to strive to be the original individual you were created to be. However, daring to be ‘yourself’ can be a very intimidating proposition. It usually means exposing yourself to judgment, scrutiny and even ridicule. As a result, many people decide to simply conform and blend in with the crowd. Though this is comfortable, it results in boredom and the likelihood of never achieving your potential. To be original and stand out from the crowd, you need to have self-confidence and courage.

Here are some tips for being your true original self:

1. Know who you are

The first step to being a true original is to know who you really are. For instance, you need to be aware of your likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. If you don’t know yourself, you will only end up confuse and waste a lot of time trying to be someone else. There are numerous personality tests out there that can come in handy for self-discovery. Tools such as The Enneagram Test and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MTBI) will not only help you understand yourself better, but will also give you tips for relating with others.

2. Trust your instincts and intuition

Everyone was born with inner gauge that guides them along the path of life. Therefore, to be your true self, you must learn to trust your instincts and intuition. No one knows what you need from life better than yourself. This does not mean that you shouldn’t listen to advice from experts, friends or family. However, when it comes to your life, you are the ultimate authority. Listen to other people but don’t allow them to make decisions for you.

3. Develop your own personality, tastes and style

Instead of developing themselves, many people try to copy those who appear to be successful or popular. While striving to be like others, they end up losing their own sense of identity and being disillusioned. Cultivate your own personality, tastes and style allows you to be more authentic and genuine. Consequently, it makes you more attractive and interesting to others. Therefore, release your fears and recognize your uniqueness. Your life should ultimately be an expression of who you really are. Steve Jobs said "Your time is limited; so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition”. If you would love to be a farmer, don’t settle for being a banker simply because it pays well or because your parents want you to be one. You might end up making lots of money and still be depressed, unmotivated or unhappy.
