How to Become a Yacht Steward/Stewardess

A Yacht Steward/Stewardess provides high standards of hospitality and service to VIP’s, the yacht owner and guests. They also contribute to the maintenance of the interior of the yacht and report to the Chief Steward/Stewardess.

The Role of a Yacht Steward/Stewardess

The main duties of a Yacht Steward/Stewardess are:

  • To maintain housekeeping standards
  • To provide 5 star service onboard
  • To know what to do in an emergency situation
  • To offer valet and concierge services
  • To maintain a safe and secure environment

Some tasks that you will be required to do are:

  • Laundry and wardrobe maintenance
  • Planning and service of dinners/parties
  • Dress the interior with floral arrangements
  • Detail cleaning
  • Silver service and bar tending
  • Provide excellent service
  • Clean the interior and restock all provisions
  • Watch keeping

A Chief Steward/Stewardess may also:

  • Order provisions and luxury items and find providers at destinations
  • Supervise the team
  • Ensure the smooth operation of the interior team
  • Maintain the budget
  • Co-ordinate with chef for the meal service
  • Have excellent knowledge of fine dining, wines and luxury goods
  • Have experience of table setting and arranging flowers

Basic Requirements and Qualifications

A Yacht Steward/Stewardess on a mega yacht would be expected to have:

  • STCW Basic Safety Training Certification
  • Seafarer medical certificate
  • Knowledge of the PYA Interior Crew GUEST programme
  • Experience of silver service, bar work or cocktail service
  • First Aid certification

Good qualities and skills that a Yacht Steward/Stewardess should have are:

  • Can do attitude
  • Excellent personal presentation
  • Knowledge of protocol and etiquette
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Creativity
  • Excellent hospitality and service skills

How to Apply

Positions are usually advertised on websites specializing in yacht jobs. Household staff agencies may also advertise Yacht Steward/Stewardess positions. Some positions may be obtained via word of mouth.

Hours, Salary and Benefits

The Yacht Steward/Stewardess will work on a contract or trip basis. This could be anything from a few weeks to 6 months. Hours are varied and you will work day and night with time off in between services.

Salary is basic and may be tax free but varies on the size of the yacht. Tips are an added extra.

Other benefits may include health and life insurance, uniform and laundry expenses.  Shared accommodation onboard, all meals and flights to base will also be provided. Training costs may also be covered.

Career Prospects

Yacht Stewards/Stewardesses may work up to the role of Chief Steward/Stewardess after a few years. It is a growing industry, with mega yachts becoming more and more popular and the role is an essential one. It is also possible to side step into Butler/Concierge roles on the ground. You could also transition into working on private jets as a VIP Flight Attendant, although flight attendant training is recommended.
