Here we go again! You think as your face is implanted into yet another sweaty armpit on the train. Wouldn’t it be nice to just be able to roll out of bed in the morning, or afternoon for that matter, at whatever time suits you? And then go to work in the next room rather than the stuffy office in the next borough? Well you can! In fact, record numbers of Brits now work from home. 4.2 million people in the UK were working at home in the first few months of this year, accounting for 13.9% of the workforce. You could be one of them and here’s how:
STEP 1: Find your talent
It’s all good and well establishing that you’d like to work from home, but you can’t just sit there twiddling your thumbs all day with nothing to do. It would be brilliant if you could mind you. Anyway, the first thing to do is well, decide what to do.
Your specialism may simply involve doing what you did at your last job but from home. So, for example you may have worked as an SEO specialist at an agency; now you’re a freelance SEO specialist.
You may want to follow a passion that’s completely different to your boring old job and boring old life. Perhaps you’re into fashion and have always loved shopping. Well now you have your own eBay store that sells amazing vintage pieces.

STEP 2: Set up shop
Now you’ve decided what you’re doing you need to know where you’re going to be doing it. Many find they’re happy with a laptop propped up on their knee, just tip-tapping away from their beds (as a certain someone is doing right now). Alternatively, you may want to create some office or storage space within your home. Because let’s face it; there’s probably not enough room in your bed for you and your entire product-line.
Setting up shop also means making sure you have the right resources, which might be physical as in a laptop with particular software or they might be financial. Consider pursuing your new venture part-time before going the whole hog and creating an ‘I Quit’ YouTube dance video at your office.
STEP 3: Advertise your services
There is a plethora of resources available to the modern freelancer. Websites such as Fiverr, People Per Hour and Freelancer let you advertise and/or search for all manner of jobs for free, within reason of course. It’s doubtable that you’ll find someone looking for your skype-based clown lessons, but then again you never know…
Get the word out there about your new business or services via social media. Set up a Facebook page, tweet your heart out and most certainly get yourself a LinkedIn profile. You may even want to consider setting up a website. And if you don’t have the skills yourself, outsource whatever you need from your fellow freelancers using the above-mentioned sites. It works both ways you know!
All that’s left now is to go to work and let the cash roll in… well, hopefully. Remember that going to work for yourself may not be an easy transition. Reach out to others with any questions you may have in forums and the like. And do make sure you get paid for your hard work, which might mean asking for some of the payment in advance. Many of us have made that mistake before and have been laughed at for our futile threats of going to the small claims court.
