Firefighting Careers in Costa Rica

Costa Rica fire service is structured around permanent fire employees and volunteers. Depending on your career objectives, you can follow a challenging and rewarding career as either a professional full time firefighter, or as a part time voluntary firefighter.

Irrespective of whether you wish to join on a permanent or voluntary basis, all firefighters must complete the relevant training course and gain the appropriate qualification to serve in the fire and rescue department.

Permanent firefighting employees

Entry requirements for permanent firefighting employees:

  • Be of 18 years or above

  • Possess the necessary educational qualification (minimum of secondary school level)

  • Hold a B1 driving license and provide photocopy of the license

  • Provide 4 letters of recommendation

Recruitment procedure:

  • Applicants must complete the relevant application form and submit it to the appropriate HR fire services department

  • Pass a psychometric test

  • Attend an interview

  • Pass the required medical examinations

  • Pass physical fitness tests

Entry requirements to become a voluntary firefighter:

  • Be of adult age (over the age of 18 years)

  • Reside in close proximity to the area in which the fire department is located

  • Be able to commit to the minimum number of hours for training and service

  • Hold a minimum of secondary level education qualification

  • Pass the respective medical and fitness tests

Recruitment procedure:

  • Contact the relevant HR department for your nearest fire station and request an application form

  • Complete the application form

  • Undergo various fitness and medical tests to ensure you are mentally and physically capable of performing fire service duties

Documents required by voluntary candidates include:

  • Submit relevant application form

  • Provide photocopy of ID and passport photos

  • Provide blood test results and medical report stating good health

  • Obtain 4 letters of recommendation
