Firefighting Careers in Russia


A career as a firefighter is not only a rewarding profession, but it also gives individuals great opportunities to develop their skills and progress in the public service sector. The Russian State Fire Service is an emergency service organization within the public sector of Russia and is part of the Ministry of Emergency Situations since its establishment in 2001.

The State Fire Service of Russia is split into two main divisions; Federal Fire Service, and the Fire Service of Federal Subjects of Russia, which combined, boasts an impressive 220,000 personnel.

Career paths with the State Fire Service include:

  • Full time firefighter

  • Volunteer firefighter

  • Laboratory and science specialist for the Institute for Fire Defence and Scientific Research

The ranks within the fire service in Russia are as follows:

  • Commanding staff of the fire department

  • Head of the fire station

  • Head of duty shift fire station

  • Head of fire brigade

  • Firefighter

There are certain requirements that must be met in order to be eligible to join the Russia State Fire Service:

  • Minimum age of 18 years

  • Be of high school graduate level or equivalent

  • Successful completion of medical and physical ability tests

  • Pass entry exam and interview (where applicable)
