Topshop may have started out as a small fashion company over 30 years ago, but it has grown to become one of the most popular brands in the UK. If you dream of working in fashion, retail, or sales, there are internship positions available at Topshop for you.
But how can you find those internship positions? Read on to find out everything you need to know…
Finding Topshop Internships
Topshop offers internships via its NEWGEN scheme. This scheme is designed to not only encourage design talent to flourish, but also to help newbie to the world of fashion to learn the ropes of a thriving company and designer like Topshop.
In order to apply for the internship, you’ll need to have a few important skills:
- The skill of multi-tasking. You’ll do a lot of different tasks at once, and it’s a fast-paced work environment.
- The skill of organization. Things can get crazy if you’re not very well organized and on top of everything.
- Being detail-oriented. Details definitely matter in the world of fashion.
- Being eager to learn. There is so much that you can learn during your internship if you’ll just take advantage of it.
- Be able to communicate. Advanced communication skills are a must!
In addition to these important skills, you also need to have a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office. If you understand how to work with Photoshop, it could also help increase your chances of landing a job, as it is very likely that you will be given small creative projects to handle.
There are many internship positions to fill, such as:
- PR (working on the magazine)
- Trend Research
One thing you need to know is that the Topshop internships are NOT paid. They are unpaid positions offering students and graduates the opportunity to shadow employees. As they shadow the employees, they can learn about the operation of the company--both the back-end (design, product development, etc.) and the front-end (sales, marketing, etc.).
The tasks that you will be involved in will vary according to the department in which you will be interning.
What You Need to Know About the Internships
Topshop DOES provide a small stipend to cover their food expenses while on the job. The company will also provide travel costs.
The length of the internship/placement lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks. They are ONLY available for those over the age of 16.
Placements are organized via the students’ schools, as it ensures that students are able to put into practice the theoretical concepts that they are learning in their courses.
There are no set working hours for interns, but most interns will work between 9 and 5--the hours of the Topshop employees. Some, specifically those attending the Fashion Retail Academy, may end up working between 10 and 4.
