How to Get Paid Well While Working From Home

Working at home often seems like a highly attractive method of earning a living. After all, there is no commute (save for the 5 seconds to walk to your computer), there are no annoying coworkers to bother you, and the dress code is VERY relaxed (yes, I think I will work in my underpants today).

But, the downside of working at home is that it’s often hard to find a job that pays what you think you’re worth. You often end up putting in FAR more hours at your desk than you would with a regular job, and you get paid less to do so.

So how can you get paid well while working at home?

Treat Your at Home Job Like a Professional

If you want to rake in the big bucks working at home, you need to act like a professional. This means:

  • Following a work schedule
  • "Arriving" at work at a set time every day
  • Putting in the hours
  • Having an organized workspace
  • Prioritizing your work
  • Avoiding distractions
  • Improving your communication skills - via phone, email, and video chat
  • Keeping work and personal tasks separate

Do these things, and you’ll be as professional as an at-home worker can be!

The Jobs that Pay

Here are a few of the best jobs to look into if you want to get paid well while working at home:

  • Virtual Assistant -- This is a job that almost anyone can do, as it involves a lot of organizing, scheduling, and planning someone else’s day. If you’re a highly organized person, it makes sense to help others organize their lives. A virtual assistant can earn anywhere from $15 to $100 per hour.
  • Translator -- If you are fluent in more than one language, translation is the job for you! You may need to obtain certification as a translator, but it’s fairly easy to do now that you have the time to invest in it. You can often find jobs even without certification, provided you know where to look. The average wage for freelance translators is roughly $20/hour.
  • Web Designer/Developer -- With millions of websites being launched every year, there is a HUGE market for those with web design and development talents. Set up your own website and start reaching out to people, and you’ll find you can earn more working at home than you would at a company!
  • Writer -- If you have skills as a writer, there is a massive market out there for you to tap into. You can write blog posts, articles for newspapers, white papers, academic research papers, case studies, e-books, textbooks, educational programs, screenplays, novels, short stories, comic books, and so much more! Beginner writers can earn at least $15 to $20/hour, but it’s not impossible to earn easily $100/hour or more.

It’s not too hard to make your work pay well if you know how to work smart at home!
