  • Working within a community provides excellent web traffic and content (e.g. blog articles, social media posts) opportunities for your own business or brand

What, you say? What I mean by this is, for local success you must reach out to local businesses, and by sniffing out the ones that are a bit behind the times, you can target them and offer your services.

They will want to thrive and make money themselves, and if it’s clear that their marketing strategies are a little ‘old hat’, you can explain to them how to direct their marketing efforts online by utilising your services.

This is a great way to get noticed in your local area and ironically, word of mouth is still one of the best forms of picking up punters. So get out the Yellow Pages, set out on foot, and branch out to lots of nearby businesses, it is sure to pay off!

Marketing, Marketing, Marketing: Know Your Stuff!

First of all, internet marketing isn’t some Mickey Mouse discipline, and in order to become successful at it (and make money), it’s vital to have equal measures of knowledge and practical experience.

In short, get qualified, then put all that theory into real life practice. There are plenty of excellent UK courses, both class room based and online which will cover all the areas of online marketing you need to know. Once you’ve completed phase one, what better way to get practical experience than marketing your own business? Start planning, put a content strategy into place and monitor your results through nifty things like Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools.

The internet is packed full of forums and free ad services, so it’s wise to use them when trying to target people in your local area.

For instance, go to Gumtree, refine your search to business and individuals (perhaps budding actors or musicians) within a 10 miles radius of you, email out well-crafted pitches which highlight the fact that you’re only up the road and can ‘pop in anytime’ and after a short while, you’ll receive some bites. That’s when you get the chance to go in, pick holes in their self-marketing efforts and dazzle them with your knowledge.
