How to Make Healthy and Delicious Breakfast Smoothies

Smoothies have taken the breakfast world by storm and for good reason. Vegans love them because smoothies are an easy, fast way to get a whole variety of nutrients in one package. Everyone else loves them because they’re filling and delicious. Whether you’re someone who wakes up early to make a big breakfast or you grab something on the way to the office, you know that being hungry in the morning isn’t fun as it sets you up for disaster later, making you visit the vending machine when your stomach starts growling before noon. Smoothies are your breakfast solution. Follow these five steps and you will be on your way to creating healthy and delicious breakfast smoothies. Drink up and enjoy.

1. Start with a Creamy Base

It’s called a smoothie for a reason: you want a smooth, creamy drink. Bananas are the most popular choice for creating a nice and creamy base for smoothies. We all know that bananas have potassium but they also have vitamin C, vitamin B6, and fiber. You can reduce your blood pressure and lower your risk of heart problems if you consume potassium. If you don’t like the taste of bananas or are allergic, you can use a quarter of an avocado, puréed sweet potato or even pumpkin purée (but choose the kind without any added spices or sugar). Pumpkin is a healthy choice because it has tons of vitamin A and is not high in calories at all.

2. Fill Up with Berries

Whether you use frozen or fresh berries for your morning smoothie, it is completely up to you. Frozen berries are just as nutritious. Use one cup of berries: choose blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, or a combination. We know that we need to consume more fruit but it can be hard to get enough during a busy workday. Therefore, one advantage of a morning smoothie is knowing that you’re consuming a lot of fruit before your busy day even begins. Berries are adored for their vitamins and antioxidants.

3. Enjoy Some Good Fat

Fat is no longer demonized – now we know that there are two types of fat: unhealthy fat (think bacon cheeseburgers or a plate of greasy nachos) and healthy fat (think avocados and nut butters). The easiest way to add some good fat to your breakfast smoothie is with a tablespoon or two of peanut or almond butter. These will help you feel full, too. For an iron boost, try almond butter. You can also add some coconut oil for a healthy fat alternative. Coconut oil has lauric acid, a fatty acid that helps your body deal with infections.

4. Think on the Sweet Side

As soon as we tell ourselves we’re eating something healthy, it’s inevitable to avoid craving cakes and cookies. Add one sweet ingredient to your smoothie (but just a little) so you don’t feel that you’re missing out on the pancakes or waffles you’re craving. Try a teaspoon of raw cacao powder. It’s as sweet as your regular cocoa powder but much healthier for you – it even has antioxidants. You can also add some sweetened shredded coconut or a touch of honey or maple syrup.

5. Power Up with Protein

Finally, to create the perfect breakfast smoothie, you need some protein. Protein fills us up and we need to consume some with every meal as it’s considered a macronutrient. An easy protein fix in a smoothie is a scoop of protein powder. You can find tons of brands in health food stores or order them online. From pea protein to hemp to brown rice, there are lots of options, and protein powder is a good source of protein for all the vegan diets. You will also get some protein from nut butters if you use that as your healthy fat. Another good source is hemp hearts which are considered to be a complete protein, meaning that you get all of the amino acids your body needs from them without the need to combine them with another food source.
