Happiness. It’s that elusive cocktail of emotions that we all want to get our hands on and try as we might, is something that always seems ever so slightly out of reach. No matter whether we love our jobs or not, or how contented we are with our lives, we live by the general consensus that we could always be a little happier in general. . Achieving total happiness in your life, however, is certainly within reach and, if you’re really focused on your own well-being, it can be achieved fairly quickly.
Approaching each day with a positive mindset is sure to get you moving on the way to total happiness, and it will have an incredibly enriching effect on all areas of your life. When we are happy, it translates into productivity at work and contentment at home. We are at our most sociable and likeable when we feel truly happy with ourselves and therefore, achieving the emotion in our lives should be a top priority. While everyone has their off days, it is very possible to feel happier more often than not and as long as you’re willing to focus on yourself and your needs a little more intently, there’s nothing stopping you from feeling much happier, everyday.
1. Think of Yourself
In your life, it’s more than likely that you will have surrounded yourself with all kinds of different people. Our social circles are one of the most important things in our individual worlds but from time to time, it’s necessary that we take a little time out to think of numero uno. Listening to your own needs - whatever they might be - could spell the difference between a good and a bad day. Taking the time out to do one thing for yourself, no matter how small, is a great way to give yourself just the kind of boost you need to be your very best self.
It could be something as small as taking yourself to a nearby cafe and having thirty minutes in peace. On the other hand, it could mean booking that trip you’ve always been meaning to take because truthfully, you don’t need an excuse to do something which you’re going to enjoy. Think of yourself as one of your loved ones. When you give them a treat, it normally makes you feel great to see them happy. If you treat yourself in the same way, you will apply the same kind of happiness, directing it internally. A little bit of happiness can be yours everyday!
2. Be Patient
For the most part, we are our own worst enemies and if we happen to get something wrong, we can punish ourselves beyond reason. In the same way that we need to treat ourselves, we also need to remember that we cannot be perfect all of the time; it’s just not reasonable! Just as we do not expect the people in our lives to be 100 percent all of the time, we shouldn’t expect the same of ourselves, either. Being a human being is a complex mix of emotions and on some days, it can all get a little much.
When we are finding it hard to move forwards or are at our most vulnerable, we should act with the most amount of patience. Failure to do so can really bring us down and have a hugely detrimental effect on our sense of wellbeing. Chances are that tomorrow will be a brighter day so if you find yourself doing something wrong, try to put it behind you and look to the future.
3. Give Back to Your Body
People that lead a healthier lifestyle are much more likely to be happy in themselves. Eating healthily and regularly working out can not only do wonders for our physical health but it can also give us the mental boost that we really need. Working out releases endorphins into your body, which gives you a sense of satisfaction and happiness. We all know that there’s no better feeling than post-workout exhaustion and sometimes, really tiring yourself out can be a great way to relieve stress.
Similarly, eating healthily can have a hugely positive effect on general health. Filling your body with the right kinds of nutrients can give you the boost you need to get to work in the morning and have a sunnier outlook on life. That’s not to say that you should deny yourself treats, of course. Cutting out all pleasure from your life can have the opposite effect on your sense of happiness so if something naughty slips into your diet from time to time, don’t sweat it. Listening to what you want can be just as important as focusing on what your body needs.
4. Breathe it Out
Feelings of stress, particularly in the workplace, can often feel completely overwhelming and might have a detrimental effect on our levels of happiness. Simply taking a few deep, slow breaths can work wonders in moments of distress and successfully help to relieve any tensions. When you feel your heart rate increase and your mind clouding over, increasing the levels of oxygen in your bloodstream will really help to balance out your emotions. Taking a few minutes out might just give you the clarity you need to see a situation in a new light and take the positive path towards solving it.
5. Build Yourself a Home
The saying goes that home is where the heart is and it’s with good reason. Our homes are one of the only places in the world in which we can truly be ourselves and therefore, it is incredibly important that we build ourselves one which is befitting of that. Living in places in which we can’t truly relax or feel comfortable can actually have a detrimental effect on our sense of happiness and cause our levels of stress to rise.
It could be something as simple as making your bed in the morning or it might be completely remodelling your bathroom to fit your needs. If you don’t feel like where you live is a home, you should absolutely do something about it. Make your home an extension of your body and fill it with things that genuinely make you happy. Seeing a bunch of fresh flowers when you get home can have a surprisingly positive effect on your sense of wellbeing.
6. Follow the Sun
Working all day in an office environment can be pretty depressing, especially during the winter months. Arriving and leaving work when it’s dark outside can make you feel like going into hibernation and if you’re feeling particularly low, it can be very detrimental to your health. As much as possible, it’s imperative that we try to spend time outdoors, in the fresh air. While extended exposure to the sun can be dangerous, going out when the weather is nice can really lift your mood and refresh your perspective. Putting yourself in natural light as much as possible will make you feel much more alert and in turn, alleviate your levels of happiness. If you have a lunch break, try going for a walk; you’ll feel remarkably better after you do.
Focusing on your own happiness might not seem like a top priority in your life but in fact, it is one of the most important things that you can do. While there is no overnight fix to daily happiness, taking small steps towards a bigger goal can have a surprisingly positive effect on the way that you feel everyday. In most cases, happiness can be achieved by simply tweaking a few things in your life. Before long, you will be walking with a spring in your step and a smile on your face!
