Whether you’re on the graveyard shift in the office contemplating another day and little to motivate you whilst you discretely look for a new role. Or you’re at home considering restarting your job search after the festive fun, take heart from some of the wise words below during the festive season.
Be Imaginative in Your Career Planning
Think left and think right, think low and think high. Oh! The things you can think up if only you try!
Dr. Seuss has it right there - make sure that you are not limiting your own opportunities because of a failure in your imagination. If you are looking for a new job right now, or considering a search in the new year, make sure you maximise your opportunities by thinking broadly about what sort of things you would like to do. Brainstorm the roles, companies and fields you would love to work in, and then narrow it down from there - you will have a far better result than if you simply try to stick to what you know on a linear path..
If you don’t like how things are, change it! You’re not a tree.
Take Jim’s advice - if you are not already job hunting, but are spending your festive season mulling over the different ways to avoid going to the office tomorrow or on January 2nd; perhaps it is time for a rethink. Hand yourself back some control, and start writing your own life story instead of getting swept along on someone else’s.
Get a Goal
You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.
C. S. Lewis
It’s that time of year - make sure you have a stretching, but achievable list of career new year’s resolutions. Some good examples are excelling in your current role, progressing with your business or finding a completely different career path for yourself. With some clear goals, you have made the first step on the course for a great 2015.
Don’t Give Up
Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.
Thomas A. Edison
And Edison should know - continual failure resulted in continual innovation and some of the most important innovations of his time. He also famously said, "I haven’t failed, I have just found 10000 ways that don’t work". Whatever you’re trying to achieve in your career, I bet you’re a few iterations off the ten thousand mark. Keep going.
But Keep a Sense of Perspective
A career is wonderful, but you can’t curl up with it on a cold night.
Words of wisdom from Marilyn. We all strive for better things for ourselves in work, to be challenged, motivated, to achieve status and financial security. But in the grand scheme of things, we must remember that there is more to life than work - and after all nobody ever had their career achievements as their epitaph. Make sure your career plans leave room for whatever it is that you like to curl up with on a cold night, and you could achieve that holy grail of balance, managing work and life in harmony for 2015.
