When bored, one of the first things people think of doing is eating. Eating occupies your hands, your mouth, and a large part of your brain, and it floods your body with "feel-good" chemicals. If you are bored or gloomy at work, you will want that good feeling, and thus you turn to food.
But the only food available at work is the stuff in the break room – vending machine stuff, bagels, donuts, etc. – or fast food delivered right to your desk. It’s so easy, so convenient, so…
NO! You must resist the urge to order fast food or snack on junk food at work! Here are some tips to help you:
Brown bag it
Want to make sure you only eat healthy food? Bring a packed lunch, complete with soup, salad, veggie sticks and a healthy serving of protein. Only eat what is packed in your lunch, no matter how "hungry" you get.
Treat your desk as a "no food" zone
The minute you see your desk as an eating station is the minute you’ve started down the road to unhealthy eating habits! Keep your desk 100% free of food. If you’re going to eat, get up from the desk and go outside or to the cafeteria. Keep eating in its proper place!
Feel the hunger pangs or cravings? Instead of giving in to the allure of that bagel or donut, take a walk outside for a few minutes – or even just around the office. Bring a glass of water with you and drink it as you walk. Food cravings pass within 5 or 10 minutes, so as long as you can distract yourself long enough, you can avoid giving in to temptation.
Never get hungry
If you are legitimately hungry at work, it’s going to be very hard to resist temptation. You need to listen to your body when it tells you that it’s hungry, and try to have healthy meals and snacks on hand for when your stomach is actually growling. Keep those snacks healthy and low in calories, but always have something handy.
Cook food you love
Do you have a favorite meal or two? Prepare those meals at home and pack them in your lunch. They will be what you are most looking forward to in the day, and that anticipation of your delicious meal will stop you from being tempted to order fast food delivery.
Choose the healthier, more filling meals
When getting lunch at the cafeteria, do not give in to temptation to go for the "yummy" meals like mac and cheese, lasagna or burgers made with white bread. Always go for whole wheat, natural options, and make sure to get a heaping pile of veggies instead of fries or mashed potatoes.
Drinking a lot of water is the key to avoiding the midday munchies! The more water you drink, the better!
Get some mint
If you’re feeling hungry, get out a stick of chewing gum or a breath mint. The flavor of peppermint helps to stifle your hunger. Brushing your teeth is also a great way to stop yourself from being hungry!
Follow these tricks, and you’ll stand a better chance of beating the office cravings!
