You should never mix business or pleasure. Or at least that’s how the popular saying goes. Of course, everything from harmless flirting to office romances takes places at every company. It just wouldn’t be possible for people who work together to never date. We’re all human, after all, and we can’t help who we fall for. But if you think that someone you work with (or work for) has a crush on you, it can be tricky to figure out whether that’s really the case or they’re just being friendly. But worry no more! We’ve prepared the following guide for you with ten signs that will help you tell if your boss, co-worker, manager, water-boy etc. is in to you.
1. You Get the Best Assignments
It’s a stereotype that you are bound to come across, if your boss has a thing for you or if you’re dating your boss, they’re going to play favorites and give you the very best projects. It may be a stereotype, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen sometimes. Of course you could be getting the best work because you’re amazing at your job. But, if your boss or manager seems to be playing favorites and giving you everything while your fellow workers are left out in the cold, that might be a sign that love is in the air. Your boss may want to stay on your good side and by giving you projects that they know you’re going to love working on. It’s a smart strategy when you think about it, you would definitely hate your boss if they gave you crappy assignments all the time.
2. Your Coworker Buys you Pumpkin Spice Lattes
No, they’re not just buying coffee for you to be nice. A pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks costs about $5-8 depending on the size. Nobody is that friendly or polite. If your coworker buys you a fancy, expensive and yummy coffee drink, especially on a daily basis, you can be sure that they’re trying to butter (or sweeten) you up. You know your own salary isn’t large enough to make daily drink splurges a reality, so you might want to consider giving the guy a break (if you find yourself into him too that is)
3. Your Manager Always Wants to Chat
Managers are busy people, or at least that’s what you would think. But yours always seems to have tons of free time to talk to you. Bonus points if they ask you into their office to speak privately on a regular basis is that you are getting extra breaks from work. It’s super obvious if your manager is always talking to you about non-work related topics - asking about your weekend, wanting to know if you’re dating anyone, inquiring about your favorite television shows.
4. Your Coworker Asks for Help All the Time
Here’s the thing. Everyone has different skills and educational backgrounds and past work experiences within the same company. But every employee is at a company for a reason. If your coworker is always asking you for assistance, you can be sure that they’re harboring a major crush on you. They definitely already know how to do whatever they’re asking you to help with. They just want to spend as much time with you as possible while working up the courage to ask you out. This strategy is pretty basic and may bring back awkward memories of elementary school or even high school when you asked your crush to help you with your Math homework. It’s basically the same situation, only now you’re getting paid a regular salary instead of sitting in a classroom all day long.
5. You Get Tons of Happy Hour Invites
Every office is different but even in the friendliest and most social of office cultures, outside socializing doesn’t happen 24/7. It’s just not possible since you’re supposed to be actually getting work done and you all have your own lives full of friends, spouses and family members. So if you’re suddenly getting a million invites to happy hours or other work events, you can bet that someone at the office is into you. There must be a reason for all the sudden socializing. This one is particularly obvious if there’s one person that you work with who personally invites you, or who is the one organizing each event. They’re too afraid to ask you on a real date so they’re using any excuse to see you outside of the office and in a more relaxed and fun setting.
6. You Go on the Best Work Trips
It’s extremely rare that a single person at a company would get to go on every work-related trip. When does that ever happen? Surely your boss wants to rotate who they send to conferences or events. But they keep asking you, and you haven’t slept in your own bed in weeks, or at least it feels that way. Wake up and smell the romance: your boss is super interested in you, and definitely not on a professional level. What, you thought it was a concidence that you got sent to Paris and Rome this past summer and your boss happened to be staying in the same hotel? You can be 100 percent sure that your awesome work trips are romantic in nature if you’re being sent to conferences that have nothing to do with your current position or your job responsibilities. Your boss just wanted to hang out with you outside the office, and they like you so much they would never dream of sending someone that would actually benefit from attending those seminars. So if you are not too bothered by your colleagues’ possible hatred, seize the opportunity to travel the world.
7. Your coworker Asks for Love Advice
Sometimes people make it clear that they like us, but at the same time they hide their feelings. How so? If your coworker is always talking to you about their love life and asking for advice on matters of the heart, you can be sure that they like you and are waiting for you to jump in and say that you totally feel the same way. You can be super sure about this if they pretend this advice is related to "a friend" or is about an unrequited crush.
8. Your Boss or Manager Praises you Often
In a perfect world, the people who manage us at work would always tell us when we were doing an awesome job. We would hear kind words and compliments all day long and the praise would keep us going through our toughest days. If only that was possible. But you seem to be getting tons of praise from your boss or manager these days. In fact, it’s a lot more than normal. And they don’t seem to be saying the same kinds of things to anyone else at the company. Hmmm
9. A Coworker Gets Drunk Talking to You
The person who sits next to you seems so quiet and harmless and innocent during the year. And then at your office’s annual holiday party, they stand there talking to you the entire evening and enjoy themselves a little too much. You know the punch isn’t good enough for that person to have consumed more than a cup, so I guess it’s safe to say that your colleague’s in to you and is too shy and nervous to tell you sober. Ain’t love (and booze) grand?
10. You're Not the Only One Staying Late
What, you thought Joe from accounting just magically happened to be working late the exact same night as you? News flash: he didn’t have to remain in the office past 5 p.m. He just wanted to be in the same place as you in case you wanted to, you know, declare your undying love for him. Pay super close attention to whoever stays late the office whenever you have to. You might just be pleasantly surprised and meet the love of your life. And you thought you were just buried in work.
So there you have it. If you’ve identified with any one of these signs then rest assured that someone at the office has the hots for you. So, now it’s time to decide if you’re happy ore creeped out by this. Don’t forget to leave us a comment in the comment section below and tell us all about it.
