One regret I have from my university days is that I didn’t ‘party’ enough. In fact, I can probably count the number of ‘raves’ I went to one hand and still have room for a mince pie.
Which? have published a Which? in the UK with the most “diverse” nightlife. Their guide is based on a survey of the views of over 12,500 undegraduate students and simple ratings of ‘high’, ‘average’ and ‘low’ are used to score universities. Have a look to see which universities make the top group for nightlife.
London School of Economics
The London School of Economics and Political Science is based in Aldwych, central London. It’s no surprise that 92% gave the nightlife a ‘high’ rating for its “diversity”. Cosmopolitan London is packed with bars, clubs and pubs so students are spoilt for choice. However, prices in London can be quite steep so it’s a good idea to hunt down the cheapest places that still offer a good time.
Set in “one of the most vibrant cities in Europe”, Manchester Universitiy is very popular with students. The “diverse” nightlife is rated highly by 91% of students. The university’s newspaper recommends the Dog and Partridge pub and Jackson’s boat as good drinking venues, whilst for music acts Bridgewater Hall and the Academy 2 are popular venues.
Newcastle’s “cosmopolitan” community of students enjoy a vibrant nightlife, highly rated by 90% of students. The dynamic student’s union hosts many “chart topping” acts for students to enjoy.
Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool University
The home of the Beetles has all the ingredients of a superb nightlife (highly rated by 90% of students at LJMU and by 88% of Liverpool University students ): great pubs, clubs, bars, live music acts, restaurants and friendly locals to boot. Students recommend Hannah’s Bar for drinks, Concert Square for music, Mello Mello for the comedy and gigs and the nightclub Nation for its weekly student nights. Liverpool is also one of the safest cities in the UK and has been awarded ‘Purple Flag Beacon Status’, a national award in recognition of this achievement.
Glasgow Caledonian University and Glasgow University
Glasgow is a city which offers a variety of social activities for university students. Popular with students are Box, a live music venue; The Flying Duck, a nightclub; and Howling Wolf. Nightlife is highly rated for nightlife by 89% of students at Glasgow Caledonian University and by 86% of students at Glasgow University.
Also located in Glasgow, Strathclyde University students can enjoy a diverse array of social activities in Glasgow. Students recommend venues such as Oran More, Barrowlands, O2 ABC and O2 Academy. Nightlife at Strathclyde University was highly rated by 88% of students/
Northumbria University is based in Newcastle, which is well known for its nightlife, shopping and culture. The nightlife is highly rated by 88% of students, with nightclubs such as Shindig and Digital being key attractions thanks to their hosting of world-renowned DJs.
Bunker, the Clifton Triangle and Stokes Croft are just a few of the popular music venues for students, 88% of whom rate the nightlife highly.
Leeds University and Leeds Beckett University
Leeds has it all: pubs, bars, clubs, late-night cafes, concert halls and excellent restaurants, so there’s something for everyone. The nightlife was highly rated by 88% of students at Leeds University and by 87% of students at Leeds Beckett University.
University of Sussex
Students at the University of Sussex are spoilt for choice when it comes to nightlife – pubs, clubs and bars abound. Not to be missed is Brighton’s oldest pub, The Seven Stars. The nightlife at the University of Sussex was highly rated by 87% of students
University College London
UCL is near to London’s Camden Town and Soho, so it is not surprising that it is rated as one of the best for nightlife. Nightlife was highly rated by 87% of students.
Nottingham Trent University
The last university to make the top group, nightlife here was highly rated by 86%of students.
