The Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie


One of the law enforcement agencies under the Ministry of Defence is the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie. This governmental body is one of the four national defense forces in Morocco that is responsible for maintaining a peaceful and stable environment within the country, protecting against terrorism and crime.


The primary duties of the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie are similar to those of civil policing and law enforcement duties of other countries. This authority is responsible for the following activities:

  • Administrative policing

  • Judicial policing

  • Military policing

These have been outlined in the code of Penal Trial Procedures of 1959. In addition to these, the Gendarmerie is a vital part of the crime investigation, prosecution and evidence gathering.


The structure of the Royal Gendarmerie of Morocco is the following:

  • Main Headquarters responsible for the primary duties

  • 22 Regional offices - with 64 Companies in the Gendarmerie and 322 posts


There are 4 main specialized units under the Morocco Royal Gendarmerie:

  1. Squadrons of the Group of Honor

  2. The Air Group

  3. Security Group and Intervention

  4. Training schools

The social service was developed in the early 1980’s in recognition of the growing demand for support and benefits. This unit ensures that all officers have moral support and medical assistance. In addition to these, officers are entitled to: family assistance and schooling infrastructure.
