The richest folks in the world teach us a lot about money, investments, philanthropy and, indeed, how to be a billionaire and remain a billionaire. Year in, year out, there is often little movement in top ten rich lists. Although we see new entrants once in a while, the same guys seem so determined to maintain their spots like their wealth very much depends on it.
So, without further ado, here is the list of the top ten richest people in the US right now:
1. Bill Gates
Any surprises here? The Guinness World Book of Records should officially throne Gates as the King of Billionaires, for he has held the top position for 16 years in a row. Just no one appears interested in dethroning him. Gates, who is a Harvard dropout, is the founder and former CEO of Microsoft.
Net worth: $79.2 billion
2. Warren Buffet
Warren Buffet proves that starting a tech company is not the only path to extreme wealth. Buffet, a Columbia School of Business graduate, is an investment guru who ‘buys’ his way to success. Show him a promising company and he won’t hesitate to invest in it! Buffet conducts most of his business through his company, Berkshire Hathaway. Oh… did I say he should also be crowned King of Philanthropists? He has pledged to give his entire wealth to charity. We just don’t know when.
Net worth: $72.7 billion
3. Larry Ellison
Larry Ellison, the former chief executive of Oracle Corporation, is a programmer, Internet entrepreneur and philanthropist. Interestingly, Ellison studied in two universities – the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Chicago – but graduated from neither of them.
Net worth: $54.3 billion
4. Charles Koch
Charles Koch owns and leads Koch Industries, Inc. – a company that is very much a jack of all trades. It deals in petroleum, gas liquids, chemicals, energy, asphalt, stock trading, and many other ventures. Koch is a Kansas native and holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Net worth: $42.9 billion
5. David Koch
David Koch is brother to Charles Koch with whom he co-owns Koch Industries, Inc. The younger Koch is also a Massachusetts Institute of Technology chemical engineering graduate.
Net worth: $42.9 billion
6. Christy Walton
All hail as we welcome the first woman billionaire. Christy Walton inherited a fortune from her late husband, John Walton, who is the son of Sam Walton, founder of Walmart. She also holds millions of shares in Arvest Bank, the largest commercial bank in Arkansas. Little is known about her education!
Net worth: $41.7 billion
7. Jim Walton
Jim Walton is the youngest son of Sam Walton and brother-in-law to Christy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He joined Walmart in 1972 from where he has raised much of his wealth.
Net worth: $40.6 billion
8. Alice Walton
Alice is Jim Walton’s younger sister and Christy’s sister-in-law. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from Trinity University, and draws much of her wealth from Walmart.
Net worth: $39.4 billion
9. Samuel Robson Walton
Too much wealth in one family, huh? Well, that just shows why Walmart is the world’s largest retailer! S. Robson Walton is brother to Jim and Alice Walton. He holds a juris doctor degree from the Columbia University School of Law, and is the chairman of Walmart.
Net worth: $39.1 billion
10. Michael Bloomberg
Michael Bloomberg is quite popular as he as previously served as the Mayor of New York City. He is the founder and chief executive of Bloomberg L.P., a private media (TV and radio), data and financial software company. Bloomberg has an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Net worth: $35.5 billion
