Despite the fact that Russia suffers from a shaky economic and political uncertainty, the country still remains rich in history, and its architecture is so unique when compared to other places in the world. Apart from its history, however, many famous personalities that were born and raised in Russia have managed to become legends globally.

Here’s the list of the top five most influential people from Russia:

#1 Vladimir Putin

Perhaps the most popular Russian figure, Vladimir Putin has been the president of Russia since May 2012. Having graduated from the Leningrad State University with a Law degree, he became an officer in the KGB where he ranked to being a Lieutenant Colonel. Putin first entered politics in 1991, and went on to serve as the Acting President under Boris Yeltsin’s administration and then became Prime Minister in 2008. Putin is credited with bringing political stability to Russia since the Russian economy grew after he was appointed for the presidency.


#2 Maria Sharapova

The famous Russian professional tennis player Maria Sharapova is currently ranked world #2 by the Women’s Tennis Association, while in the past has even been ranked as #1 in the world four times in 2011 and 2012! Sharapova is the reigning champion in singles at the French Open and thus far has won 34 singles titles and five Grand Slam titles. In 2012, she won an Olympic silver medal for Russia at the London Games.

#3 Alexander Ovechkin

Alexander Ovechkin is a Russian professional ice hockey player and captain of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League. Having begun playing in the Russian hockey leagues at the age of 16, Ovechkin managed to lead a successful career during the years that followed. In 2013, the all-star winger became the 8th player in history to win the Hart Memorial Trophy for League MVP three times and was selected first overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

#4 Irina Shayk

Irina Shayk is a Russian model and actress who became well-known after her appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue between 2007 and 2014. As a Sports Illustrated cover model, she has covered international magazines such as Annabelle and Paris Capital. She has also worked as the host of the Russia’s Next Top Model show and first made her acting debut as Megara next to Dwayne Johnson in the film Hercules in 2014.

#5 Pavel Datsyuk

Another Russian professional ice hockey player, Pavel Datsyuk is the alternate captain for the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League. Datsyuk began his career as a hockey player after being discovered by the team’s scouts while playing in the Russian Superleague. Thus far, he has won the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the league’s top defensive forward three years in a row (2007-2010). He is currently considered one of the most talented players in stick handling.
