What is life? Most people have likely pondered this question at one time or another through an introspective lens. After a long day of work they get home and think "what is the meaning of my life? Is it to study until I’m old enough to work and then work until I’m old enough to retire? Then complacently walk to my grave?" Most follow this path without ever stopping to consider a different existence. Before they know it, the hair on their head is silver and the time left on their clock is slim.
Too many people live a life of regret. They look back on their past and wish they’d done things differently —made it to their son’s or daughter’s birthday party, taken that trip to Thailand, followed their entrepreneurial spirit. Instead, they let the days pass by them not ever working to advance or fulfill themselves. They make sure that ends meet, bills get paid, and mouths get fed, but at the end of the day they’re left with an empty feeling in their chest.
Of course, you can find balance. Your life will not be fullfiled by sitting back, feet up on the table, waiting for your big moment. No, life is what you make it and it’s up to you to put in the ingredients to make it a life worth living. What are these ingredients? Here are just a few.
Smell The Roses
Life can be breathtakingly beautiful if you let it. No matter what job you have and how many hours of work it requires each day, there must be time for you to sit back and breathe deeply. Take in all the wonders surrounding you. Go to a park and look at the flowers, trees, and forest critters. Marvel at their existence and truly feel that you are alive and living in this moment. Do not let your present ever slip away because you are too caught up in your future or past. This will only lead to a life whittled away by memories of past failures and anxieties about the future.
Follow Your Dreams
Life is about looking your fear right in the eyes and saying, “I’m going to do it anyway.” Take that chance and never look back. If you fail so be it, but at least you tried your hardest and gave it your all. Failing at something you put your heart and soul into is so much better than regretting that you never took the leap of faith to at least try.
Care About Your Family
You wouldn’t exist without your family; never forget that. Don’t make excuses as to why you haven’t called grandma in a month, just do it. Life is about the love that your family provides and that you provide them. They are some of the most important people in your life, and they always will be. If you’re someone who doesn’t have a family, then don’t let that stop you from creating your own. At some point, your true friends turn into family, too.
Love like you have nothing to lose. It’s truly an amazing thing that human beings have the capacity to love someone to the extent they can. Keep your heart open and be yourself and someone will come your way. Once it happens, or if it already has happened, never let him or her go. He or she is what life is about.
Never Stop Exploring
Never stop exploring. Life is meant to have mystery and depth. Never quench your thirst to learn and discover. Keep reading books, talking to new people, and travelling to novel places. It will keep your brain young and vibrant and your life profound.
You are the alchemist of your own life; you control the ingredients that go into it. Your life has any number of directions it can go and you are at the helm. Steer it in the course you want to go, and live your life with no regret. Life is what you make it.
