After getting rid of the majority of my worldly possessions, I jumped on a plane from New Zealand and jet-setted across the globe. I arrived in London with nothing but a rather large suitcase and the hope of making it in this massive concrete jungle.
With no job and limited savings, I was under pressure to find work to avoid sleeping on the streets and singing for food. Temporary work was my savior. I signed up with a temporary job agency the day after arriving in London and the following day I got a call at 6am to report for my first day of work. That in turn ultimately led to landing a full-time job a few months down the track.
Upon arriving in London I had zero connections in the world of work. Here’s why temporary work was a smart career move for an unknown girl in a big city.
As a temporary worker, I spent time working for multiple property, beauty and fashion companies. During this time, I met a lot of people, one of which ended up creating a full-time role for me in their company. Temporary work can be the greatest form of networking because you get to spend a decent amount of time with people in their work environment. You can find out if the company is hiring, the type of person they are looking for and then demonstrate why you are that person.
An inside view
When you apply for a job, you generally have no idea what it will be like to work for that company. For all you know the office could be an extremely toxic environment, to be avoided like the plague. Working in temporary positions gives you an inside view into the realities of day-to-day life in different offices. You can discover if the company is one you would like to be a part of.
Temporary work is quite flexible. If you have a job interview you can call up your agency and let them know you aren’t available for work that day. If you already have a full-time job it can be extremely tricky to pop out for a few hours to attend an interview. Temping gives you the luxury of being able to make time to attend interviews for your dream job.
Money in the bank
If you live in a city like London you need quite a bit of money to survive. It’s expensive! Working for a temporary job agency means that you can keep the money flowing while you’re still hunting for your ideal job. If you’re struggling to make ends meet it is difficult to be in the right headspace to put your best self forward for job interviews. Temporary work allows you to keep bringing in money, which is one less thing you have to worry about.
Getting your big break is difficult, but temping can be an excellent way to get your foot in the door. The greatest gift that being in temporary positions offers is the chance to prove you are a hard worker to potential employees. It’s an amazing opportunity to make connections, which may just lead you to scoring your dream gig.
