How to Work Less And Earn More

I know what you are thinking right now: “This is impossible”, right? All your life, they taught you that in order to be successful you need to work long and hard. Studying five hours a day will get you better grades than someone who just skims through their homework. More hours+more work= more and better results.

But, what if I told you, that is incorrect? In reality, working smart, beats working hard and in some cases working more can, in fact, harm your career.

Working less and earning more isn’t easy. It requires creative thinking to find more effective ways of doing things. Have you ever thought that your methods may not be as efficient as they could be?

1. Find Great Mentors

The very successful Jim Rohn once said that, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Who are your five? Are they already living the life you want to be living? If not, what does this say about you and your prospects?

In order to grow your business and turn it into a success, you need to surround yourself and your company with other mentors, ready to influence you and give you that entrepreneurial spark. These mentors need to already have the lifestyle you seek, so they can show you the right way to achieve it. They can show you all the bad habits you may have (and are not aware of); mentors are there to observe your business with detachment and offer you constructive criticism for career growth and success.

2. Sack Yourself

Earning more while working less is one of the biggest dreams many business owners have. In your business, your profit is gained by people working for you; therefore, all you need to do is hire extra employees.

We get it; it is your business and no one knows it better or cares more about it than you. However, they say that to survive in this corporate world you should never make yourself irreplaceable. If you can’t be replaced, you can’t be promoted (think of promotion as earning more and working less).

So, sack yourself so your business can grow. Contrary to popular belief, creating a great team that is efficient is one of the most crucial tasks an owner could ever have. This great team frees up time for you to maximise your full potential. Let go of control and learn how to trust others.

3. Apply the 80/20 Rule

The 80/20 rule (or pareto principle), in essence, means that roughly 80% of output or sales come from just 20% of the workforce, customers or input.

We are not suggesting cutting down everything that doesn’t directly benefit you. But this rule is there to push you to be a little bit cruel in cutting time in areas that don’t contribute as much.

A few suggestions:

  • Decrease time spent on emails
  • Decline work or clients that don’t have much value (that require a huge amount of input)

4. Earn More Happiness?

Most employees aren’t happy with their work-life balance. More than 40% of people working, admit to sacrificing other important aspects of their life for their job. It seems that we are under the wrong impression- working longer (and harder) will result in more money for our families which will eventually result in happiness. However, this rarely ever happens. Even if you are earning more money for your family, by spending so much time at work, it pushes you further away from your loved ones. People need to realise that additional income doesn’t buy anyone more happiness.
