Before They were Famous - 8 First Jobs of Celebrities from the 60s

A lot of people who think of celebrities simply think of them for what they are known for now. But many people forget that most didn’t start out as celebrities. Everyone had to start somewhere.  Here are 8 celebrities who started from humble, and often surprising, jobs before becoming what they are today.

Martha Stewart

When Martha Stewart was growing up in the sixties, she was a model. This helped with paying her way while attending Barnard College. She was in a few campaigns, including a Chanel campaign, and was in a featured editorial in Glamour.

Jimi Hendrix

Back in 1961, Jimi went into the Army after he was caught twice riding in cars that were stolen. He was given an ultimatum – either he joined the Army or he went behind bars.  It’s not surprising that he didn’t do well in the Army and was eventually discharged.

Pierce Brosnan

Before he was James Bond, Pierce had a lot of talents. One of the most surprising talents that he had was fire-eating.  Back in 1969, he learned the way to do this after he found a workshop in the Ovalhouse Theater in London.

Harrison Ford

Back in the later part of the sixties the actor best known for being Han Solo, and then moving on to be Indiana Jones, worked as a carpenter.  He did work for such people as Richard Dreyfuss and Joan Didion.

Morgan Freeman

Many people love the work of Morgan Freeman. But not too many people know that Morgan’s first job was that of a dancer.  Thanks in part to his dancing lessons; this suave debonair actor was able to dance at the World’s Fair in 1964.

Madeline Albright

Most people know of Madeline Albright as the Secretary of State. But many people don’t know what she did before then.   She was an editor for the famous Encyclopedia Britannica, along with being a journalist.

Vera Wang

If you ask most people who Vera Wang is, they will say that she’s a famous designer.  But most aren’t going to say that she was a figure skater. Back in 1968, she was an Olympic hopeful for the US team. Unfortunately, she failed to make the team and so she decided to go into designing wedding dresses.

Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren has been long known for his lines of women and men’s clothing. But what a lot of people don’t know is that for two years he was in the Army, from 1962-1964.  It wasn’t until after that that he started with his line that has made him famous today.

If you find yourself in a job that you don’t like or you think that you aren’t going anywhere, remember these 8 celebrities and where they started.  You may not be where you want to be right now, but you never can tell what your future holds.  Don’t get discouraged and don’t give up.  The celebrities above didn’t – and look at where they are now.  You never know what will happen.
